Progress bars = powerful tools for enhancing user engagement and motivation. 🔹The Zeigarnik Effect suggests that people remember uncompleted or interrupted tasks better than completed ones. A progress bar visually represents an incomplete task, encouraging users to complete it. 🔹The Goal Gradient Effect suggests that people tend to work harder as they perceive they are closer to achieving a goal. A progress bar visually indicates proximity to task completion, increasing motivation as users get closer to 100%. 🔹The Endowment Effect suggests that Progress bars can give a sense of ownership or accomplishment, even with partial completion, motivating users to continue. We recently launched a progress bar in the MyFitnessPal app. It helps members build better food habits that support their desired outcomes by giving them a score (shown visually as a smiley face) that's calculated from logging activities. Recommended focus areas change daily to provide gamification and help people identify new nutrient goals!
