"In the ULS unit “The Gift of Giving,” my students read the easy-read book Kindness in the Community. The book taught us about helping others through a service project. As we read, we talked about ways we could help people in our own community. My students decided they wanted to make crafts for older people to help them feel less lonely, just like the characters in the story. We made cards, bookmarks, and suncatchers to brighten the day of residents at an assisted living home. This made kindness feel real to the students, and they were excited to help. One of the best parts was when the students wrote their cards. They took their time to think of kind and uplifting messages. It was clear they wanted to make a positive impact. Reflecting on this project, I see how important it is to give students chances to connect with their community. This project not only tied into our n2y lessons, but it also helped reinforce the idea of kindness. It inspired the students to feel proud of making a difference. I’m grateful for the framework n2y provides. It shows how easily these lessons can be applied to real-life situations.
