69 years ago today, 14-year-old Emmett Till was murdered by white supremacists in Mississippi. Mamie Till-Mobley's decision to have an open casket funeral and permit photos of her son's body to be published in Jet magazine was an event that helped galvanize the Civil Rights Movement. Today, we honor his memory and commit to fighting for all the Black youth unjustly targeted in our country.

America's premier legal organization fighting for racial justice through litigation, advocacy, and public education.
About us
LDF is the nation’s first and foremost civil and human rights law organization. Since its founding under the leadership of Thurgood Marshall in 1940, LDF has been committed to transforming this nation’s promise of racial equity and justice into reality for all Americans. Through litigation, advocacy, and public education, LDF seeks structural changes to expand democracy, eliminate disparities, and achieve racial justice in a society that fulfills the promise of equality for all Americans. Working in the areas of criminal justice, economic justice, education, and political participation, we seek to diminish the role of race in the criminal justice system; increase fairness and participation in all aspects of economic life; increase equity in education; and achieve full civic engagement and participation in the democratic process for all Americans. We use litigation, advocacy, educational outreach, monitoring of federal and state government activity, coalition building, and policy research to achieve our goals. Additionally, through our scholarship, fellowship, and internship programs, we help students attend and graduate from many of the nation’s best institutions of higher education. "The NAACP Legal Defense & Educational Fund is simply the best civil rights law firm in American history." - President Obama

This year we're honoring 60 years of Freedom Summer, the trailblazing voting rights project that changed America. The project, also known as simply Freedom Summer, was meant to draw national attention to the persistent voter intimidation and dilution happening in Mississippi and to directly counter the false narrative that Black people in the South were not registered to vote. Local Black organizers and volunteers set up polling stations throughout the state and helped register voters and advise them of their rights. On June 28, 2024, the Supreme Court decided in Loper Bright Enterprises v. Raimondo to eliminate the Chevron deference, a longstanding legal principle that allowed federal agencies certain deference authority to interpret the laws they implement on behalf of Americans. Federal judges will now have even more power to invalidate important regulations in a wide range of areas – even when they are not experts in the field. The work of federal agencies touches nearly every aspect of daily life, and many of their regulations impact critical issues affecting Black people like overtime pay, student loans, employment discrimination, eviction protections and fair housing, and access to clean water and affordable internet services.
