Hurricane Helene is revealing multiple examples of how Community Health Center staff prioritize patient needs above personal hardship. This is common in health centers, where caring for vulnerable patients is central to the mission, Taina Lopez, NACHC’s director of emergency management told Direct Relief in a new article; “Lopez described one health center CEO who’d been hesitant to accept an offered air mattress after being displaced by Hurricane Helene — she was worried about taking a resource from someone whose need might be more urgent. Health center leaders were running emergency response operations while simultaneously trying to locate staff members who hadn’t checked in. They were worried about paying staff, arranging transportation, and organizing the child care that would enable providers to undertake lifesaving care.” https://lnkd.in/e9q8S6_h #HealthCenters #ValueCHCs #Helene

NACHC is tracking the rapidly evolving situation for health centers and their communities in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene. Community Health Centers that are in a position to help are already doing so. "We are distributing baby items, hygiene kits, bottled water, whatever they need,” Rachel Willard, CEO of Wilkes Community Health Center in North Carolina, told NACHC. "We are part of this community and are committed to its long-term wellbeing and growth,” Parinda Khatri, PhD, CEO of Cherokee Health Systems. The North Carolina Community Health Center Association is among the first responders and is coordinating outreach to the 13 health centers located across the 25 disaster counties. NACHC's Director of Emergency Management, Taina Lopez, has been in touch with primary care association partners in North Carolina, Florida, Georgia, Tennessee, Kentucky and South Carolina and coordinating with federal and NGO partners to advance resources and assistance where they are needed. “Our goal is to reach out and mitigate impact and effects of this natural disaster on health centers and the population they serve to ensure essential continuity of care," she says. NACHC is pleased to learn that Johnson & Johnson has dropped its controversial plan related to the 340B Drug Pricing Program. For over 32 years, the 340B Drug Pricing Program has provided upfront discounted medications to safety net providers, allowing them to stretch increasingly scarce federal resources and reinvest in patient care. We are grateful for the quick action from Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSAgov), HHS, and for the bipartisan leadership from U.S. Representatives Abigail Spanberger (D-VA-07), Dusty Johnson (R-SD-AL), Doris Matsui (D-CA-07), Rob Wittman (R-VA-01), Debbie Dingell (D-MI-06), and Tracey Mann (R-KS-01) in sounding the alarm that the unapproved rebate model recently proposed by Johnson and Johnson is a violation of the federal statute that will harm safety net providers and patients. The journey to CEO for Kenny McMorris MPA, FACHE, CHCEF started as a child when he was a patient at the Charles Drew Health Center, Inc., in Omaha: “I was a patient here all the way up to age 18. I went away to college then came back. My mother and my grandmother are patients here, too.” Under McMorris’ leadership, the health center has thrived, delivering nearly 40,000 patient visits annually! A true champion for health centers, McMorris says, “I want this place to feel like a community, a family for our patients, because it is a family for me.” Learn more about McMorris in the article on the new online magazine, Community Health Forum: https://lnkd.in/enU7Ss_Z #ValueCHCs #CommunityHealthForum
