Dear Friends, It snowed at Sugarloaf this past week. They had what they call “snowliage” which is snow on the mountain while there are still fall colors or foliage on the trees. I think it’s a magical time of year, and it’s a beautiful way to usher in the long months of winter. But I am excited about winter, because I love to ski! I have skied since I was a little girl when my family would take trips on the weekends to mountains for day trips, but an annual week-long trip to a mountain where we would all take ski lessons together. Skiing is a life-long sport that brings families together. It certainly brought mine together as a girl, and now my boys are lifelong skiers after growing up with the sport of ski racing. Sugarloaf is significant in my life because I worked and lived there for many years, but it is also an example of a really strong brand. It’s a brand with a community of raving fans that call themselves #Sugarloafers. They are people who proudly display the famous Sugarloaf triangle logo on their cars (usually SUVs) when they are driving to the mountain every weekend. They are people who are joined together by the love of place and who are fiercely loyal to their mountain. It has a fabulous brand story dating back to the 1950s when a group of Mainers decided to develop Sugarloaf Mountain into a destination ski resort. We can learn from Sugarloaf’s strong brand. If you are in charge of marketing a brand, think first of your brand community. Think of the people who are the raving fans, and who give your brand the best kind of marketing…that is, word of mouth! Think of how your brand shows gratitude to these loyal fans for their loyalty, and how you reward them for being faithful to your brand. They are your most valuable customers! Branding is a fascinating subject in my book, and it’s all about having a strong brand story, a community of people who spread the good word about the brand, and a well-defined visual identity like the Sugarloaf triangle that you can put on your ‘merch’ so people can align themselves with the brand. I love talking about branding, and especially personal branding. We’ll talk about that in next month’s Marshall Report, but for now, take a look at Sugarloaf’s brand and how they nurture their raving fans, the people who call themselves ‘Sugarloafers.’ Best, Nancy Did you enjoy this letter? Dear Friends, As summer turns to fall, I am refocusing on business and personal goal setting. One thing I have noticed over the past year or two is the link between my ability to focus on one thing at a time and my constant need to check my phone. Do you feel the same way? It’s unsettling at least and anxiety-provoking at worst. I am trying to re-learn the ability to focus, whether it’s on the person in front of me who I’m conversing with or the project I’m working on, such as writing this letter. I feel there is a direct connection between our dependence on our phones and our ability to concentrate on one thing at a time. I also believe that the worldwide rise in anxiety and depression is directly tied to our phones, where there are always messages that require my time and focus, or news on social media from friends and family that can be upsetting, such as violence or sickness. Two books have been beneficial to me, and I thought I would share them with you: "Indistractable: How to Control Your Attention and Choose Your Life" by Nir Eyal "The Mind of the Leader: How to Lead Yourself, Your People and Your Organization for Extraordinary Results" by Rasmus Hougaard. One theme in each of these two books is that multi-tasking is impossible. I thought I was capable of multi-tasking, but in reading these books, I have learned that our brains cannot focus on two things at a time. So, I am going to work on these skills and try to focus on the people I am meeting with and doing one thing at a time. This feels like a solemn vow that I am making to you, my people, and I guess it is! I hope you will let me know in the comments if you are going to try to do the same thing!
