Fire safety test ready to fly high🔥 An experiment studying how solid materials catch fire and burn in the Moon's gravity is set to launch on Blue Origin’s upcoming New Shepard suborbital flight. Developed by NASA Glenn together with Voyager Technologies, the Lunar-g Combustion Investigation (LUCI) will help researchers determine if conditions on the Moon – with reduced gravity – might be a more hazardous environment for fire safety. On this flight, LUCI will test the flammability of cotton-fiberglass fabric and plastic rods, and the entire vehicle will launch and rotate at a speed to simulate lunar gravity. Glenn researchers will analyze data after the mission. LUCI’s findings will help NASA and its partners design safe spacecraft and spacesuits for future Moon and Mars missions. About us
Located near Cleveland Hopkins International Airport, Glenn's main campus, Lewis Field, has world-class facilities including wind tunnels, drop towers, vacuum chambers, and a research aircraft hangar. Glenn’s Neil Armstrong Test Facility in Sandusky, Ohio, is home to the world’s largest and most powerful space environment simulation chambers. It is the only place in the world that can test a full-sized spacecraft for all the extreme conditions of launch and spaceflight. One of ten NASA centers, Glenn’s work is essential to the agency and integral to the regional economy. Shape memory alloy spring tires developed at NASA Glenn were recently put to the test on rocky, Martian-simulated terrain. A group of our researchers visited the Airbus Mars Yard test facility in Stevenage, UK, to see them in action and take steps toward future exploration of the Red Planet. “If you can’t fly, run; if you can’t run, walk; if you can’t walk, crawl; but by all means keep moving.” – Martin Luther King Jr. Inspired by his words, we continue pushing the boundaries of exploration, moving forward for the benefit of all humanity. 🌎

#TBT: By flying in a series of up-and-down parabolas, aircraft can simulate weightlessness. In the ‘90s, NASA Lewis (today NASA Glenn) used a DC-9 to help scientists study fluids, combustion, and materials in a microgravity environment. High school students in Indiana are contributing to NASA’s groundbreaking research to develop quieter, more fuel-efficient aircraft engines. NASA Glenn and Notre Dame recently hosted students from The Portage School of Leaders High School to see NASA’s Advanced Noise Control Fan operate in an outdoor setting. The fan was configured to study quieter aircraft engine technology, and the collaboration aimed to encourage students' interest in #STEM careers. “It was beyond words,” said Rebecca Anderson, a junior from the high school. “The part I enjoyed most was when they got the fan running. It was really impressive to see how quiet it was. I feel like everyone involved in STEM would love to work for NASA, including me.” Discover more about this collab: https://lnkd.in/g-zXwds9 📸: Matt Cashore/University of Notre Dame #NASA #Aviation #Students #AircraftEngine #AircraftNoise #Engineering #Research
