Bar Star of the Week - Ellen M. Miller, International Ombuds Association Ellen Miller truly embodies what it means to be a Bar Star. She has worked on the local, state, and national level, serving as the Executive Director of the San Diego County Bar Association, the Executive Director of the California Lawyers Foundation, and Associate Executive Director (Initiatives and External Relations) of the California Lawyers Association, and the Section Director of the Section of Dispute Resolution for the American Bar Association. In her current role as the Executive Director of the International Ombuds Association, Ellen’s work includes advocacy, writing and speaking on behalf of the profession and shepherding the organization internationally. In addition, she consults with bar associations across the country, helping them to develop their strategic plans and ombuds programs. Her NABE leadership includes serving as NABE President in 2021, and previously serving as the organization’s Secretary. She has served as co-chair of the San Diego Regional Council of the California Society of Association Executives, a board member of the Crawford Law Academy and Foundation, a commissioner and co-chair of the pro bono committee for the California Access to Justice Commission, among other roles. Ellen won the “Friend of the Organization” award from the Tom Homann LGBTQ+ Law Association, was awarded the NABE President’s Award by past president Robert Craighead, was included in the San Diego Business Journal’s list of “Women Who Mean Business,” and San Diego Metro magazine named Ellen as one of the “Women Who Impact San Diego.” She is a trained mediator and facilitator, and currently serves on the Forbes Nonprofit Council. Bar Star of the Week - Ashley Horan, Washoe County Bar Association Ashley Horan is the CEO/Executive Director of the Washoe County Bar Association. In the last 20 years of residing in Northern Nevada, Ashley has given back to her community by serving various vulnerable populations including Awaken Justice, raising awareness & prevention of sex trafficking; Board member of Sierra Regional Group, developing & instructing alternative treatment for drug & alcohol offenders; tutoring math for the school district; collaborating with the State’s Behavioral Intervention Committee & Human Rights Committee for individuals with developmental & intellectual disabilities; and acting Project Manager for the Sheriff’s Office assisting cognitively impaired children & elderly. She is part of the Nevada Women’s Lobby, Young Professionals Network, & National Organization for Women. In 2024 she developed a clothing drive through the Bar, benefiting men & women in local rehabilitation programs. This year she was awarded the US flag from the Second Judicial District Court for her work at the Bar and service to the community. She serves on both the Operations & Communications Sections for NABE. Ashley was recently appointed Chair of the DEI Committee for NABE. Her proudest accomplishment by far is as the mother of her beautiful 14-year-old son & 11-year-old daughter…& being “that mom” at their sports events! #BarStars #BarAssociations #noplacelikeNABE

ICYMI: Last month, the Association of Corporate Counsel (ACC) launched its ACC Well-being Toolkit for In-house Lawyers.
