NAIC President & CEO Robert L. Greene (Bob) hosted an engaging conversation yesterday with Tony Lee, Co-Founder & Managing Partner of One Rock Capital Partners, LLC , during our latest Industry Insights webcast. Lee detailed the growth of One Rock Capital Partners into one of the largest diverse-owned private equity firms in the U.S. with $7 billion in assets under management. He shared the firm's value-oriented buyout strategy, focusing on Chemicals and Process Industries, Food and Beverage Manufacturing and Distribution, Specialty Manufacturing, and Business and Environmental Services. He explained how he looks for attractive companies that are improvable and inexpensive, and he shared examples of a few acquisitions. The son of Korean immigrants, Lee recounted his childhood, moving frequently due to his father’s service in the U.S. Army, attending seven different K-12 schools and how his father’s transfer to a base in South Korea later helped him in private equity. He also discussed the impact of COVID-19 on his firm and why he enjoys raising institutional investment capital. Finally, Lee shared what he calls “Tony’s Five Things:” (1) the importance of a good Verbal FICO Score, a measure of one’s credibility; (2) the importance of spending time mentoring with no expectation of an ROI; (3) the necessity of having manners and adhering to etiquette; (4) the need to understand that there are no shortcuts to greatness; and (5) why spend time building a network or relationships is crucial. NAIC is happy to welcome Boyd Street Ventures into our network. Boyd Street Ventures (BSV) is a minority-owned, early-stage venture capital firm targeting above-the-crowd returns for its LPs by discovering, investing in and guiding innovative but under-the-radar companies. Founded by General Partner, James H. Spann, Jr., MBA, a Marine veteran with 30 years of executive experience in the Life Sciences sector, BSV has received anchor investments from five institutional investors to date. The firm anticipates securing several additional investments as it pursues a total raise of $50 million before the December 31, 2024 planned close of Fund I. BSV has invested in 16 portfolio companies, 10 of which are Life Sciences businesses, and made 14 follow-on investments since launching Fund I in March 2022. The firm intends to devote most of the funds it raises between now and yearend to additional follow-on investments in its most successful portfolio companies, several of which could be exiting earlier than had been originally anticipated.
