The National Association of Peer Supporters (N.A.P.S.) is a 501(c)(3), non-profit organization, which started with a small group of peer support specialists in Michigan. Founded in 2004, the organization now includes members from every state and several countries outside the USA. Members of this network come together to share their ideas and innovations, exchange resources and information, and provide unified consensus concerning issues affecting peer supporter communities. We are actively and intentionally working on making N.A.P.S a more inclusive and safe space for individuals who have historically been marginalized. We aim to ensure that all cultures and communities have a place to join in support of increasing, enhancing, and sustaining peer support in diverse communities throughout the USA and globally.

Earlier this week we, National Association of Peer Supporters (N.A.P.S.), hosted our annual conference, in partnership with The Alliance for Rights and Recovery (formerly NYAPRS) and it was an incredible experience! Our amazing keynote speakers Azzy-Mae Ní Mháille and Lorenzo P. Lewis, and our breakout speakers pushed us all to think more deeply and confront deeply held biases. As members of the peer movement we have an obligation to critically confront the systems of oppression that we’re impacted by, work within, have to deal with every day, and that sparked our movement. I know that I walked away from the conference feeling deeply inspired, and thrilled to have experienced a space that was for peers by peers. A huge thank you to everyone who attended, and all of our board members and staff who worked so hard to make this happen!

I’m elated to be a voice in the “peer” movement as I truly feel that those who are closest to the problem will only fix the issues our communities are facing.
