Updates

  • #NationalFireNews: The National #PreparednessLevel has decreased to a 2 (PL2) as of 7:30 a.m. (MDT) today, October 29. Due to more favorable fuels and fire weather conditions, significant wildland fire activity continues to decrease in multiple Geographic Areas. The National Interagency Coordination Center has also seen a notable reduction in the ordering of all resource types for several days. There continues to be good availability for most nationally shared resources for this time of the year. 🔥 More NFN: https://lnkd.in/gTj5mZB 📸 Photo of the #ElkFire from InciWeb.

  • The Great Basin Smokejumpers were recognized as Community Heroes at Friday night's Boise State University Football game! Based out of NIFC, these smokejumpers provide rapid response to wildfires in the Great Basin area. They were invited to join the Broncos on THE BLUE for recognition of their valiant efforts this year. They are representative of the wildland fire community at large, who have worked tirelessly this #FireYear2024 to protect our natural landscapes and communities. NIFC is lucky to be located in a community that is exceptionally supportive of wildland firefighters, such as the City of Boise. With Boise State University just a few miles down the road from our campus, this recognition was a great honor. Thank you to BSU, the fans, and the community for the welcome and support! #ThankAFirefighter #ItTakesAllOfUs #WeAreBLMFire 📸 Photos by Andrea Good, BLM.

  • The National Significant Wildland Fire Potential Outlook was issued today by Predictive Services at NIFC. Look ahead at the last two months of 2024, and then two months into #FireYear2025. After fire activity decreased the latter half of September, another increase in fire activity occurred the first half of October, as the National #PreparednessLevel rose from three (on a scale of 1-5) at the beginning of the month to five October 8. This escalation back to five represented the first time the National Preparedness Level increased to five on three separate occasions in the same fire year. Fire activity then greatly moderated the latter half of October, with the National Preparedness Level decreasing to four October 18, three October 22, and two October 29. While most geographic areas followed this overall trend in activity, the Southern and Eastern Areas remained moderately active through the end of October. #FireYear2024 (year-to-date) annual acres burned for the US is above the 10-year average at 124% of normal, but the national year-to-date tally of wildfires remains below average, near 93%. 🔥 Read the full outlook here: https://lnkd.in/g5TRk5y7 #NationalFireNews
