From the mountains of Hawaii to East Coast grasslands, infusions of funding from 2022’s Inflation Reduction Act are preparing our national parks to fight the greatest threat to the National Park System: climate change. 4 in 5 Americans support IRA's funding to the National Park Service to prepare parks from unavoidable floods, fires, droughts and disease caused by climate change. The good news? Since being signed into law, the National Park Service has revealed its plans for 100% of its IRA funding. On our blog, science-backed solutions that are transforming parks so they can withstand climate impacts. #IRA #InflationReductionAct #ClimateChange #NationalParkNews #ProtectOurParks #ClimateResiliency

There are just two sites in the National Park System dedicated to modern Latino history. We've been celebrating the ribbon cutting of the second, Blackwell School National Historic Site, with an eye toward the first: César E. Chávez National Monument. Established twelve years ago, this national monument honors one of the most important U.S. labor and human rights leaders of the 20th century. César Chávez co-founded the United Farm Workers of America in 1962, the first agricultural labor union in the nation. On our blog, how the monument came to be, what you'll find there today, and Chávez's lasting impact. #LatinoHeritage #LatinoHeritageMonth #HispanicHeritageMonth #Chávez #CésarChávez #LaborRights #ProtectOurParks #Conservation #ParkNews

"What is a weekend?" We have Frances Perkins to thank for the answer to that one. Among her many accomplishments as Labor Secretary, Perkins standardized the 40-hour and made the whole "weekend" concept possible. On the latest episode of "The Secret Lives of Parks:" why do so few people know about Frances Perkins? And how could a national park site change that? Thank you to Giovanna Gray Lockhart, executive director of the Frances Perkins Center, for joining us! Climate events like flooding and wildfires have already harmed historic landscapes and resources. Without new funding to properly study the potential impacts of climate change on America’s historic sites, thousands of historic buildings, monuments and artifacts could be lost to fire, flood and other climate-related events. But it's #ClimateWeek, and we're here to talk solutions. On our blog, NPCA’s Senior Director of Cultural Resources Alan Spears discusses the “quiet crisis” facing cultural resource preservation — and what can be done about it. #NationalParks #CulturalResources #History #ParkProtection #ParkAdvocacy #HistoryAndCulture

There was a time when bears were treated like pets and circus attractions in America’s national parks. They ate from the hands of camera-toting tourists, snared fish from artificially stocked streams, and were allowed to rummage through trash dumps while spectators gawked. That all changed when George Meléndez Wright came along. Ninety years ago, the pioneering biologist reminded us that wolves, bison, and grizzlies came before people. And because of him, they still do. #HispanicHeritageMonth #Conservation #NowReading #Biology #Yosemite

Shoes on. Phones down. (well, after you’re done reading this) Get moving with NPCA to protect our national parks! There is nothing quite like our national parks. They’re the places where we reconnect with nature, engage with American history and make timeless memories together. We need our national parks. And they need us right back. In the face of a changing climate, habitat loss, record visitation, cuts to funding and staffing — you have the power to give back to the places that have given us so much. So let’s get moving for parks! We’re inviting our NPCA community to join our virtual walking challenge and move 30 miles in October to raise critical funds and awareness for our parks. Set up your fundraising page and take steps to protect national parks today!

"For many of us, our Latino heritage and values foster a deep respect for the land and a sense of stewardship. As part of #LatinoConservationWeek, we're sharing reflections from Sally Garcia, NPCA's Los Angeles Outreach Manager. "Environmental injustice is a critical issue that disproportionately affects marginalized communities. In Los Angeles, Latino neighborhoods often bear the brunt of pollution and environmental hazards, which can lead to serious health problems. Despite these hurdles, the Latino community plays an important role in the environmental movement." #Conservation #ParkAdvocate #Conservationist #latinocommunity #environmentaljustice #losangeles
