#OTD Operation Torch was the first major Allied amphibious invasion of World War II, launched on November 8, 1942, in North Africa. The invasion involved American and British forces landing in French Morocco and Algeria, which were territories controlled by Vichy France (aligned with Nazi Germany). The Allies wanted to open a new front against the Axis powers by gaining control of North Africa, which would provide a strategic base for further operations in Europe and the Mediterranean. Led by General Dwight D. Eisenhower, the operation involved three main landing sites: Casablanca, Oran, and Algiers. General George Patton played a key leadership role as the commander of the Western Task Force, the only all-American force in the operation. Although initially met with resistance from Vichy French forces, the Allies eventually secured the region. The success of Operation Torch helped weaken German influence in North Africa, leading to the eventual defeat of Field Marshal Erwin Rommel's Afrika Korps in 1943, and set the stage for the invasion of Italy. It marked the beginning of significant U.S. ground involvement in the European theater. #OperationTorch #WWII #WorldWarII #GeneralPatton #Patton #GeneralEisenhower #MilitaryHistory #History #USMilitary Telling the stories of our nation's Veterans is only possible because of donors like you. Eugene B. Sledge was a U.S. Marine and author best known for his memoir "With the Old Breed", which provides a harrowing and honest account of his experiences during World War II. Born today in 1923 in Mobile, Alabama, Sledge enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1942 and served as a mortarman in the 1st Marine Division. He fought in some of the most brutal battles in the Pacific Theater, including Peleliu and Okinawa. Sledge’s service left a profound impact on him, and after the war, he pursued a career as a professor of biology, dedicating his life to education. His memoir, published in 1981, is regarded as one of the most important firsthand accounts of the Pacific War, capturing both the violence and the psychological toll of combat. Sledge’s detailed narrative has since been widely acclaimed, serving as source material for the HBO miniseries "The Pacific" and offering insight into the experiences of Marines fighting in WWII. Happy heavenly birthday, EB 🇺🇸 #EugeneSledge #EBSledge #WithTheOldBreed #ThePacific #USMC #Marines #OTD

The mud and boots of the Korean War. This photo was taken in fall of 1951 in "The Punchbowl" — around this same time, The Battle of Bloody Ridge and the Battle of Heartbreak Ridge were fought in that region. It's not easy to find more intimate photos like this, the types of closer photos we're so used to seeing today — especially in a war. #warphotography #militaryhistory #veterans #military #koreanwar #historyphotography
