About us
Since 1970, the Native American Rights Fund (NARF) has provided specialized legal assistance to Indian tribes, organizations, and individuals nationwide who might otherwise have gone without adequate representation. NARF has successfully asserted and defended the most important rights of Indians and tribes in hundreds of major cases and has achieved significant results in such critical areas as tribal sovereignty, treaty rights, natural resource protection, and Indian education. NARF is a non-profit 501c(3) organization that focuses on guaranteeing that federal and state governments live up to their legal obligations. In 2020, NARF released a groundbreaking report on the obstacles to political participation experienced by Native voters. The U.S. Army continues to defy federal law, refusing to comply with NAGPRA to return nearly 200 ancestors buried at Carlisle Cemetery. Recently, the Winnebago Tribe of Nebraska took a crucial step toward justice, filing an opening brief with the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit to repatriate the remains of two Winnebago boys. “NAGPRA ensures our children can be brought home in a respectful way,” said Winnebago Tribal Historic Preservation Officer Sunshine Bear. Tribal Nations have a unique government-to-government relationship with the United States. The withholding of essential federal funding without consultation is breach of the United States trust and treaty obligation to Tribal Nations. The United States must consult directly with Tribal Governments before it takes actions that affect us. #HonorTheTreaties #ProtectTribalFunding
