About us
IllumiNative is a national, Native woman-led racial and social justice organization founded in 2018. Our mission is to build power for Native peoples by amplifying contemporary Native voices, stories, and issues to advance justice, equity, and self-determination. Informed by our research, we transform how Americans and key institutions think about and engage with Native peoples by targeting the systems that influence public opinion—pop culture and media. Our tools for this work are Native-led research, Native-authored narratives, and Native created-content. With these tools we disrupt invisibility and toxic misconceptions about Native people and push forward a new, accurate narrative that shows our strength and resilience.

Hollywood, it’s time to elevate Native talent—producers, directors, and actors—into key decision-making roles. This isn’t just about inclusion; it’s about ensuring our stories are told with the accuracy, respect, and depth they deserve. New research from IllumiNative and USC Norman Lear Center reveals the powerful impact Native representation has on TV. Shows like ‘Rutherford Falls’ and ‘Reservation Dogs’ are not just entertaining – they’re changing the narrative and driving increased support for Native issues. The study also highlights the importance of hiring Native talent on screen and behind the scenes to avoid harmful stereotypes and ensure authentic storytelling.
