#NUWCDivisionNewport welcomed Congressman Gabe Amo (D-R.I.) on Oct. 22 for his first visit to the warfare center since being elected to Congress in 2023. Amo represents District 1 in Rhode Island, which includes all of Newport County, and is a member of the House Committee on Science, Space and Technology. “The Naval Undersea Warfare Center is an essential part of Rhode Island’s Blue Economy,” Amo said. “The center helps strengthen our defense partnerships with allies abroad and boosts our local economy by supporting the domestic production of submarines and autonomous naval vessels.” The visit was part of a multi-day, multi-stop tour to highlight Rhode Island’s leadership in the Blue Economy. Amo met with workers, small businesses, educational institutions and nonprofits that are at the heart of the Blue Economy in Rhode Island. The tour featured key industries like offshore wind, coastal resiliency and design, ocean research and innovation centers. “I appreciated the opportunity to engage with NUWC’s leadership on my Blue Economy tour today to better understand how their critical research and development protects our national security and maintains stability throughout the world.” Read the full story at: https://lnkd.in/ev3iuv4u #WhatWeDoMatters #underseasuperiority #BlueEconomy

#NUWCDivisionNewport welcomed the Hon. Dr. Kevin Rudd, Australia’s ambassador to the United States, and U.S. Sen. Jack Reed (D-R.I.), for tours and briefings on Oct. 16 as part of the warfare center’s continuing support of #AUKUS, a trilateral security partnership between Australia, the United Kingdom, and the U.S. “Thank you for the work you do here. It’s part of my revolving education as the ambassador to see all these different elements. It’s an impressive ecosystem you’ve developed over the many years, particularly in undersea warfare,” Rudd said. “Thank you for your professionalism and engagement with us. In Australia, we’re proud of our submarine history as a country and government, going back to the diesel subs we ran in the First World War. “This is a century-long tradition for us, and it is becoming increasingly serious that the undersea warfare capabilities our allies provide help maintain an overwhelming advantage.” The visit opened with an overview of Division Newport’s efforts, as well as discussions with warfare center leadership and department heads. This included Dr. Martin Irvine Jr., NAVSEA Warfare Centers (NSWC/NUWC) Executive Director, Division Newport Technical Director Marie Bussiere, and Commanding Officer Capt. Chad Hennings. “The AUKUS partnership between the U.S., United Kingdom and Australia offers a unique opportunity for our nations to enhance military capabilities, deepen interoperability and strengthen deterrence in the Indo-Pacific,” Hennings said. “Division Newport is committed to supporting AUKUS, as well as the U.S. Navy mission of promoting prosperity and security, deterring aggression and protecting the American way of life.” Read the full story at: https://lnkd.in/edGW3mdh #WhatWeDoMatters #underseasuperiority

Meet Samantha Masse, a security engineer in #NUWCDivisionNewport’s Security Engineering Branch of the Undersea Warfare Combat Systems Department, who is being featured as October’s new professional. Originally from Fairhaven, Massachusetts, Samantha received a bachelor’s degree in computer science from Salem State University in Massachusetts in May 2024 and was hired at Division Newport in July 2024. “I am proud to be one of few students in my graduating class who had a job lined up post-graduation,” she said. As a security engineer, Samantha makes sure that cybersecurity best practices are integrated into submarine system network environments so that cyber threats are mitigated, ensuring uninterrupted mission accomplishment. What she likes most about Division Newport are her co-workers and work environment. “The people are so understanding and want the best for you,” she said. “Everyone wants to see you succeed. I also love the flexibility and opportunities in this job. You always have the space to do and learn more.” Samantha is most grateful for the support given to her by her brother and sister-in-law. “I am grateful to have a good group of supporters, but I am especially grateful for my brother Dann and sister-in-law Jil,” Samantha said. “They have helped pave my career, as well as taught me the important things they don’t teach you in school.” In her free time, Samantha enjoys acting, singing and dancing. Her advice to new professionals is that they pursue their interests. “Stay involved by signing up for things and learning from the people around you,” she said. As we close out National #HispanicHeritageMonth2024, celebrated Sept. 15 to Oct. 15, #NUWCDivisionNewport recognizes Gabriel Gonzalez-Padin, an engineer in the Combat Systems Engineering Branch of the Undersea Warfare Combat Systems Department, who was born and raised in Isabela, Puerto Rico. A 2020 graduate of the Inter-American University of Puerto Rico at Bayamon, with a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, Gabriel moved to the U.S. at age 23 and was hired at Division Newport in July 2023. During his time in college, he participated in hands-on learning and various engineering projects and competitions including work on the Honeywell Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Navigation Challenge and held an internship at Johnson and Johnson. “My career path started with my first internship at Johnson and Johnson in 2019 as a manufacturing and test engineer,” he said. “After that, I felt more capable of supporting small scale projects and I joined Honeywell Aerospace as a systems engineer in 2020. Once I graduated, I began working as a power distribution engineer at Pike Engineering in Maitland, Florida, from 2021-23 then joined Division Newport supporting the Payload Control System Integrated Product Team as a combat systems engineer. These roles further developed my leadership skills and have made my career dynamic and challenging.” His interest in engineering began at an early age. “I grew up in an engineering environment, with both my father and uncle pursuing careers as engineers,” Gabriel said. “Seeing how they worked on cars, and how they troubleshot issues, set my initial sights on becoming an engineer. My family’s unwavering support and encouragement solidified my determination and prompted me to participate in engineering programs during high school, igniting my ambition for the field and laying the foundation for my academic and professional journey.” In the future, Gabriel wants to take the initiative to lead a small-scale project within his team as well as pursue a master’s degree in systems engineering. National Hispanic Heritage Month is important to Gabriel. “As someone with roots in this community, it is important to be recognized as a Hispanic so that I can inspire other Hispanic professionals to pursue their goals and contribute to the workforce in meaningful ways,” he said. #whatwedomatters
