Exciting news! The World Health Organization Regional Committee for Africa has adopted the Framework for the #GlobalDiabetesCompact — a game-changer in our fight against diabetes. The region grapples with over 400k diabetes deaths annually, premature mortality 58% higher than the global average, and the highest proportion of undiagnosed diabetes (over 1 in 2 of all people with diabetes). This unanimously approved framework commits governments to take action by strengthening leadership, boosting financing, and integrating care through WHO #PEN and #PENPlus. Together, we’re paving the way for equitable diabetes care across Africa. 🌍💪 Read more: ▶

We join with Breakthrough T1D and the International Diabetes Federation in being saddened by the loss of Professor Hussain. He was a true partner in working with us to ensure equitable access to treatment for people living with type 1 diabetes through PEN-Plus. We are also grateful we had the opportunity to spend time with him in Dar es Salaam at the International Conference on PEN-Plus in Africa in April. 😥

The World Health Organization calls for governments in the African region to fulfill their commitment to the PEN and PEN-Plus regional strategies. WHO calls for increasing recognition of: ▶ the emergency posed by NCDs across the African region, ▶ the premature loss of lives at all stages of the life cycle, and ▶ the grossly inequitable access to prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and ongoing care. It's time to recognize the urgency of the problem and take action.

Today we take time to remember Paul Farmer, MD, PhD, a physician, scholar, and advocate for improving health for the poor worldwide who was one of the founders of Partners in Health. Paul launched the Harvard Medical School Master of Medical Sciences in Global Health Delivery (MMSc-GHD) program along with Joia Mukherjee and other faculty. This tribute video was assembled by alum Caroline Mae Ramirez, MD, MMSc '22 and includes words from Joia about Paul's life and a song that Christina Thompson Lively wrote and performed, "Mountains Beyond Mountains." The title is from a Haitian proverb and is the title of a book about Paul's life. We are so grateful for the opportunity to have worked with Paul, and we are grateful to continue to work with so many talented students, alumni, faculty and staff in the MMSc-GHD program. We keep Paul's family and community in our thoughts today on the second anniversary of his passing as we remember all that he shared and continue this important work. https://lnkd.in/eu8rxCHP
