About us

The Nebraska National Guard serves dual state and federal missions. The state mission of the Nebraska National Guard is to provide trained and equipped organizations to protect life and property, and to preserve peace, order and public safety. Nebraska National Guard troops are called to state active duty to execute missions within the state when authorized by the governor. The adjutant general of Nebraska serves as both the senior military officer in charge of the Nebraska National Guard as well as the State Emergency Management director. To assist the adjutant general with the day-to-day operations of the Nebraska Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), an assistant director is appointed. In the event of a disaster or an emergency, local government responds using local resources. When these resources are deemed inadequate and state resources are required to cope with the situation, local officials contact NEMA day or night. NEMA assesses the disaster and makes recommendations to the governor on whether a state declaration is needed. If the governor declares a state emergency, state resources -- to include the Nebraska National Guard -- can be used within certain restrictions to provide assistance. The federal mission of the Nebraska National Guard is to provide the United States combatant and geographical commanders with trained and equipped units ready for national emergency or war, in accordance with U.S. Department of Defense plans. Troops are called to federal service for national defense missions, either in the United States or abroad, when authorized by the president. The Nebraska National Guard is made up of the Nebraska Army National Guard, which consists of nearly 3,400 Soldiers in units located in 23 communities across Nebraska, and the Nebraska Air National Guard, which is made up of nearly 1,000 Airmen located either at the Nebraska National Guard air base in Lincoln, Nebraska, or with the 55th Wing at Offutt Air Force Base.

Nebraska National Guard leadership including Maj. Gen. Craig Strong, the adjutant general, visited 155th Air Refueling Wing Airmen June 10-13, 2024, at Andersen Air Force Base, Guam. Their main goal was to visit Nebraska’s Airmen and see how they were supporting the mission of U.S. Indo-Pacific Command. “I think circulating and visiting our Soldiers and Airmen is really the best way for me to understand the operating environment and understand the challenges and the rewards that our Soldiers and Airmen receive through training and exercises,” Strong said. “I can get reports and I can get phone calls but actually being on the ground and being able to see them performing their military training live and hearing it straight from the Soldiers and Airmen is really the best assessment I can ever receive.” As one of the adjutant general’s main duties, visiting these Airmen is also a great time for Strong to show that he cares, sees their work as important and valid, along with showing them they are appreciated. “They were pleased to see their leadership interested in what they were doing. I felt it was highly rewarding not just to see their operational space - going to the hangar, talking to them in operations building and on the runway - but also where they were staying and having the opportunity to recognize great performances and great achievements of the Airmen,” Strong said. “It was a great morale and welfare opportunity just to say thank you and recognize their outstanding contributions.” While deployed, the Airmen have traveled from Guam to different locations throughout the pacific theater for exercises and real-world operations. Nebraska National Guard leadership had the opportunity to recognize Airmen for their achievements in going above and beyond. Some of the accomplishments included identifying errors with enough time adjust or re-plan missions, deployment extensions and spearheading programs that helped make tasks more efficient. They also used this time to touch base with commanders in Guam to discuss how they could support the mission without being a burden and how the KC-135R Stratotanker fits in with the mission of the pacific theater. Strong said it was a great time to thank them for taking great care of the Nebraska National Guard Airmen and get their perspective on the air refueling mission and understanding the strategic requirements of that area of responsibility. “They were also incredibly complementary of the great work of the Nebraska Hustlin’ Huskers,” Strong said. “How the Nebraska National Guard links in to what is arguably the most strategically important mission that we are currently performing could not happen without the 155th Air Refueling Wing.” (Story by Staff Sgt. Jamie Titus. Photos courtesy of Maj. Trevor Boyd and Capt. Christina Lemburg) #NEGuard #AirNationalGuard #NationalGuard #Airmen #military

The American flag flies at half-staff today from dawn until noon. The graves of our armed forces are marked by flags, and flowers in remembrance of their service. It is Memorial Day. This is a time when we commemorate the service of men and women who have died serving this nation in uniform. What began as Decoration Day more than 100 years ago, is a day that now is celebrated nationwide - a day ripe with a sense of liberation. The day recalls the wars fought to make and keep this nation free: the war fought to end slavery in the United States; the wars in foreign lands, where American forces fought side-by-side with like-minded allies determined to liberate the world from totalitarian rule. Over the past 20 years, Memorial Day for members of the National Guard and their families, friends and employers has become a time to honor someone they knew and loved, as Citizen-Soldiers and Airmen have given their lives since the National Guard transformed to an operational reserve force supporting global wars on terror. This Memorial Day we come together in spirit to remember and honor all the fallen. With grateful hearts we will observe a National Moment of Remembrance to individually pause at 3:00 p.m. local time Monday with the purpose of reflecting on the harrowing sacrifices made by brave and selfless men and women who have successfully preserved democracy and the American way of life. We also honor their families, Gold Star Families, by recognizing the lingering heartache of losing a loved one in service to a grateful state and nation. From the Militia formed even before the formation of the State of Nebraska to current operation, Nebraskans have protected and defended as is the motto of the Armed Forces. To protect and defend the people of the state and the United States, the Constitution, and ultimately democracy and freedom. This dedication continues to be the driving force of the Nebraska National Guard. We are eternally grateful to all who have given their lives in service and we remember and cherish the sacrifices they have made for us. #NEGuard #MemorialDay #Remember #HonorThem

More than 100 Nebraska National Guard Soldiers and Airmen continue to serve on state active duty, integrated with local law enforcement in designated areas in Douglas County and Washington County that were significantly impacted by the Arbor Day tornadoes on April 26, 2024. The Soldiers and Airmen work in rotating shifts providing controlled vehicle access and conduct roving patrols to ensure the safety and well-being of all within the affected areas. On average, Guard personnel are turning away approximately 200 vehicles a day from the affected areas. The Nebraska National Guard will continue to support the mission through the weekend, and into next week. (Photos by Staff Sgt. Alexander Schriner, Staff Sgt. Gauret Stearns and Capt. On April 11, Nebraska Governor Jim Pillen signed a proclamation declaring April as the Month of the Military Child. While true year-round, this month is when we formally recognize the courage, perseverance and tenacity demonstrated by our military-connected children, youth and teens and what they mean to our community. Nebraska has more than 25,000 military children from all branches and components across the state. Without the strength and support of these children it would be impossible for service members to complete their mission, in support of the state and nation, at home or abroad. In support of the Nebraska Adjutant General's enduring priorities, Nebraska Warrior & Family Support, the NE National Guard Child & Youth Program and the military community at large, work year round to fortify these resilient military children through respectful, inclusive and holistic programming. #NEGuard #GoodLifeGreatStrength #MilitaryKids #GuardFamily #NGMOMC24

Earlier this week, Nebraska Governor Jim Pillen; Maj. Gen. Craig Strong, Nebraska adjutant general; and other Nebraska National Guard senior leaders spoke with Soldiers and Airmen at the Camp Ashland Training Site prior to their deployment to Texas to work alongside Texas National Guard and Texas law enforcement partners to prevent, deter and interdict transnational criminal activity between ports of entry. Thirty-four personnel from the Nebraska National Guard have volunteered for this second mission. They will conduct operations on state active-duty status in support of the Texas Military Department as part of Operation Lone Star. #NEGuard #CitizenSoldiers #CitizenAirmen #GoodLifeGreatStrength

At our core, journalists are storytellers. As much as I love being behind the anchor desk, I equally appreciate the chance to get out into our communities and tell inspiring stories. With the help of the Nebraska National Guard, I was able to tell several stories about their heroic actions during the 2019 floods. It was a small part of the incredible coverage done by my KETV colleagues to look back at the changes over the last five years. This is one of those stories. It’s about a Nebraska man who found the perfect way to pay back the National Guard’s generosity for helping save his family farm. #tvnews #nebraska #2019floods #newsanchor #journalist #nationalguard

Today marks exactly 5 years since Nebraska Army National Guard helicopter crews took flight on March 14, 2019 to begin conducting search and rescue missions during devastating statewide flooding in Nebraska. The crews would complete a total of 66 hoist missions — a number never anticipated for our landlocked state.
