For the past two weeks NLS Managing Attorney Melissa Evans has visited branches of the Carnegie Library in East Liberty and the Hill District to present a program on criminal record clearing and the Clean Slate Act. Interested in learning how you can assist tenants facing eviction who are preparing for virtual, community-based mediation with their landlord through Just Mediation Pittsburgh? There is still time to join Neighborhood Legal Services in person on Wednesday, August 21, 2024 from 12:00 pm to 3:00 pm for a 3 credit Landlord/Tenant Mediation Advice Project CLE seminar at Dickie, McCamey, & Chilcote, PC. This CLE will provide an overview of relevant landlord/tenant law, and prepare attorneys to provide crucial legal advice to renters in our community who are facing eviction. Attorneys will volunteer with NLS for about 2 hours every other month to provide brief legal advice by phone to tenants. The Urban League of Greater Pittsburgh’s Advocacy and Policy Officer John Ukenye participated in a roundtable hosted by the offices of Congresswoman Summer Lee, Allegheny County Executive Sara Innamorato, Pennsylvania Attorney General, and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) to discuss how our clients are overburdened by excess junk fees. Pennsylvania has one of the highest rates of overdraft fees in the country. Thank you to CFPB Director Chopra for visiting the Thelma Lovette YMCA of Greater Pittsburgh today to address the elimination of junk fees and to support ongoing efforts to protect our consumers and strengthen our communities.
