NEIWPCC [NŪ-Ē-PĬK] is a regional commission that helps the states of the Northeast preserve and advance water quality. We engage and convene water quality professionals and other interested parties from New England and New York to collaborate on water, wastewater, and environmental science challenges across shared regions, ecosystems, and areas of expertise. We develop, coordinate, and conduct training courses for wastewater and other water quality professionals regionally and nationwide. We conduct research into water-related topics, monitor environmental factors, and fund such work by others. We also implement and fund environmental restoration and other on-the-ground projects. We fund and/or staff programs that engage the public through events, exhibits, web and print publications, and other outreach activities. We actively represent the interests of member states at meetings with federal and state officials and in regional and national water and wastewater associations. The Hudson River National Estuarine Research Reserve (HRNERR), a NEIWPCC program partner, is part of a national network of 30 coastal sites designated to protect and study estuarine systems alongside surrounding communities. Hear from Christopher Mitchell, environmental analyst at #NEIWPCC and HRNERR research coordinator, as he describes his daily routine working to study this unique and diverse ecosystem. The Hudson River is tidally influenced for 110 miles, and is home to freshwater tidal marshes that experience tide swings of 4-5 feet daily.
