We are excited to announce that NBW has been selected to lead a team of design partners in creating a Comprehensive Land Plan for the 200+ acre Piedmont Park in Atlanta, Georgia. Often referred to as “Atlanta’s Beating Green Heart”, the Midtown park has long been intertwined with the city’s own vibrant culture and history. While the first land plan was created in 1912 by the Olmsted Brothers, it largely went unfulfilled. Now, as the Piedmont Park Conservancy celebrates its 35th Anniversary, they are looking to the future of this beloved park. With design goals around sustainability, accessibility, and community, NBW is honored to assist the Conservancy in planning for future generations of park users and stewards. If you’re local to Atlanta, follow the link below to find how you provide input, feedback, and ideas for this important project. https://lnkd.in/gSWUQRHU Images of the Park and Engagement Courtesy of Piedmont Park Conservancy PEREZ PLANNING + DESIGN, LLC Ingrid Kanics The Cultural Landscape Foundation Etm Associates LLC Atlas #NBWLA #NelsonByrdWoltzLandscapeArchitects #NelsonByrdWoltz #LandscapeArchitecture #NewProject #PiedmontPark #AtlantaGeorgia #ATL #ParkDesign #urbanpark #piedmontparkatl

So many exciting tours to choose from for this year’s Texas Society of Architects Annual Conference and Expo, including Memorial Park Land Bridge by Nelson Byrd Woltz Landscape Architects! This project is one of the largest natural bridges of its kind and successfully reconnects the north and south halves of Memorial Park, allowing both pedestrians and wildlife to safely navigate across the busy street. I am in awe every time I get a chance to drive through these impressive structures. You will also get to tour the new SCHAUM Architects designed Vibrant Cafe as part of this tour! Travel, talks, tours, and of course, Tim Horton's! Our Team crossed all of our Ts earlier this summer by attending the Canadian Society of Landscape Architects 2024 Congress in Winnipeg, Manitoba. We were honored to share some of our work on the prairies with Congress attendees, along with our friend and colleague Matt Sloan from the City of Edmonton. A big thank-you to our new friends at PUBLIC CITY who took the time to show us around the city and walk us through their truly inspiring, exciting, and innovative projects within Winnipeg. We hope to return the favor someday soon! Our Canadian team members look forward to continuing to showcase more of the True North to the rest of NBW. Completed in 2019, the House of Flowers landscape bridges the distance between its Russian River Valley location and the Flowers Winery vineyards along the bluffs of the Sonoma Coast — where their story begins, and their featured Pinot Noir and Chardonnay grow. Flowers Winery devotes its winemaking to sustainable production methods, honoring the agrarian nature of Sonoma vineyards and their dependence on the surrounding distinctive ecologies. Reflecting that devotion through the tasting room’s landscape and cultivated garden, NBW’s highly contextual design manifests and amplifies the deeply rooted sense of place and story essential to Flowers’ winemaking practice. A diverse native plant palette immerses visitors and supports pollinator species and the utilization of low-impact maintenance strategies. Looking for a fun way to cool off during these hot summer days? We’ve got the place! Reservoir Park Recreation Center, opened in June, is Washington, D.C.’s newest city park, complete with an indoor pool, playground, a restored fountain, and splash pads! Reservoir Park is an exceptional example of the creative reuse of municipal infrastructure. The development of this community amenity involved the complex transformation of the early 20th-century McMillan Sand Filtration Site, a historic public works landmark. The facility filtered Potomac River water for D.C. households until 1986, when operations ceased. Preservationists fought to save the site as open space and a community park. After years of discussion and planning, the 6.2-acre park now welcomes the community as a recreational space while honoring the site’s industrial heritage. We are proud to have contributed to the landscape architectural design and construction of this unique public space, collaborating with Gilbane Building Company and Quinn Evans to realize the Master Plan and concept design developed by Perkins Eastman DC and Nelson Byrd Woltz Landscape Architects. Visitors to the park can cool off at the multiple splash pads, picnic, swim, and enjoy the amenities, all while learning about the history of the former filtration site. The park preserves the iconic silos, and views into the original sand bins, filtration cells, and other structures have been retained. Future development surrounding the park will include new housing and retail. Washington, DC Mayor Muriel Bowser praised the new park: “For the first time in decades, this site is not only back to productive use, but open to the public. Today, we are celebrating the transformation of underutilized land into a beautiful new recreation center and play space for the community.”

A time lapse of our legacy project Citygarden’s expansion through construction to completion. With the grand opening this past May, this new addition came at the 15th anniversary of the original NBW-designed three-acre park, connected the halves of the sculpture garden once split by Ninth Street, and unveiled five new large-scale art installations. The unique park has long shown the opportunities that exist for urban parks, and we are excited to see the renovated space continue to be a key part of the community and city! Thank you to BSI Constructors & OxBlue Construction Cameras for capturing the video. - - - - - Black Locust Lumber #GatewayFoundationStL #PublicGarden #NelsonByrdWoltz #NBWLA #LandscapeArchitecture #StLouis #Citygarden #SculptureGarden #StLMo #LandscapeArchitectureFirm #Construction

NBW is honored and humbled to begin working with Ela Dam LLC, the MAINSPRING CONSERVATION TRUST INC, and the sovereign Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians to envision a reconnected riparian landscape following the planned removal of the Ela Dam on the Oconaluftee River. Our team is immensely grateful for the day spent on the water and at Kituwah listening and learning to Edler Tom Belt and Mainspring Conservation leaders. The Egwanulti (Oconaluftee River) has been embraced in a special relationship with the Cherokee since time immemorial. Its flow has provided for unparalleled biodiversity within the traditional territories of the Cherokee, providing tohi (wellness, state of peace) to all living things in what is now known as Western North Carolina. However, for the past century the River has been restricted through the development of a hydroelectric dam at Ela, North Carolina. The dam presents a physical and spiritual barrier for the flow of water and all it provides, including rare and special species such as Ugiidatli (sicklefin redhorse fish) into the Qualla Boundary, the land sustained by the Eastern Band of the Cherokee after the Trail of Tears. By removing the dam and reconnecting these lands and waters, the Mainspring Trust along with their partners and NBW will support the vastly successful Land Back initiatives advanced by the EBCI Community

Here's an interpretive element at Memorial Park you might not know about! The Kinder Land Bridge West Mound was intentionally designed by Nelson Byrd Woltz Landscape Architects to function as a solar compass, tracking and revealing the movement of the sun. From the center of the circular lawn, visitors can view markers of the precise locations where the sun will touch the horizon at sunrise on the solstices and equinoxes. This encourages an awareness of changing seasons and reminds us that we are all connected by forces much larger than ourselves. Have you ever noticed these features while exploring the land bridge?
