Community-Based Sustainable Development

About us

New Ecology addresses global environmental issues by bringing the benefits of sustainable development to the community level with a concerted emphasis on equity. We make the built environment more efficient, healthy, and resilient by advancing sustainable practices, ensuring accessible, affordable, and healthy environments in which to live and work. As a nonprofit organization with 25 years of experience in affordable housing and sustainable developments, New Ecology advances programs that meet the needs of residents and communities while reducing carbon impacts. Our Green Building Services team advances the impact of sustainable development in new affordable multifamily housing by helping developers and their teams construct these residential or mixed-use buildings in a way that is healthy, affordable, resilient, and accessible to the communities they serve. Our Existing Building Decarbonization team transforms existing housing stock by working with owners and operators of multifamily affordable housing to pursue practical strategies for building decarbonization over time, reducing impacts and controlling costs while increasing sustainability. Our Climate Smart Communities program catalyzes local community development initiatives to deliver not only affordable housing and opportunities to build equity, but homes that offer improved indoor air quality and which are designed and built to withstand what we expect from our changing climate. We also have a Research and Development initiative that innovates and creates new opportunities for technologies, processes, and approaches that can make sustainable development in the built environment more efficient, cost-effective, and impactful. www.newecology.org

The City of Boston Office of Workforce Development is conducting a survey designed to better understand the hiring needs of organizations who support building decarbonization, transportation electrification, electric supply and distribution and resiliency in the Greater Boston Area. The study will be used to determine if there are specific occupational shortage that need to be addressed by additional investments in the local training ecosystem. TAKE THE SURVEY HERE: https://lnkd.in/eDQiQTAJ By completing the survey, clean energy employers can ensure that there is an adequate supply of skilled workers to meet project development needs over the next 18 months. New Ecology believes it is essential to ensure that a well-trained workforce is prepared for the important work that needs to be done in order to reach 2030 and 2050 climate goals in the City of Boston and beyond. Will we have the workforce needed to construct new, healthy, resilient, efficient buildings while transforming our existing building stock into efficient, healthy, affordable, and resilient homes?

What a beautiful day! Last weekend, our very own Joshua Galloway attended Westhaven Day in Charlottesville, VA. Westhaven Day is an annual event where previous and current residents get together to celebrate their community. Non-profit service providers, kids’ activities, and more fill 30 tents along the Main Street. New Ecology is part of the design team working with the Westhaven public housing community on a redevelopment without displacement master plan. The first image shows the “design tent,” where residents used stickers to identify images that resonated with them in topics of safety, sense of community, urban connections, density and history and memory. One of the images shows the community questionnaire that was translated into the languages spoken at the property. This was the second of many planned engagements with the Westhaven community. We are looking forward to working with them further on this master plan!

EPISODE 5 of the BuildingWell Podcast is out NOW! How do multifamily building owners typically choose a replacement hot water system, and why is this not the best practice? What does a hot water system have to do with a Ferrari? And what is the juiciest piece of savings owners can go after when replacing their systems? Join host Alina Michelewicz and co-host Michelle Moran as they speak to Energy Engineers Neil Donnelly, P.E. Donnelly and Charlie Simek about how real data from real buildings can guide more efficient and lower-cost system replacement, and how this can fit into a larger decarbonization plan. We explore the opportunities within recently monitored domestic hot water systems and the steps for owners, operators, engineers and utility program administrators. This episode was made possible by a Mass Save Community Education Grant. Listen and follow BuildingWell TODAY!
