About us
The New England Aquarium is a catalyst for global change through public engagement, commitment to marine animal conservation, leadership in education, innovative scientific research, and effective advocacy for vital and vibrant oceans. It is the only Boston-based cultural institution with a mission focused primarily on the environment, promoting the importance of protecting the blue planet through innovative exhibits and educational programs. These are some highlights of the Aquarium’s mission in action, on exhibit, and through our education, conservation, and research programs here on Central Wharf and around the globe. -The Trust Family Foundation Shark and Ray Touch Tank and the New Balance Foundation Marine Mammal Center showcase the diversity and importance of marine animals. -The Giant Ocean Tank inspires visitors with the beauty and complexity of marine habitat through replication of a Caribbean coral reef. -Aquarium educators lead a nationwide initiative on climate change and inspire future ocean protectors with hands-on programs such as Harbor Discoveries Camps and live blue™ Ambassadors. -The Aquarium’s Marine Animal Rescue Team leads regional efforts to rehabilitate and release endangered species of sea turtles at our state-of-the-art Animal Care Center. -Aquarium scientists advise some of the nation’s largest seafood companies on methods to enhance the sustainability of commercial fisheries worldwide. -The Aquarium is home to the world’s longest-running right whale research program, coordinating efforts along the East Coast of the U.S. to restore the population of this endangered species. -The Aquarium collaborates with partners around the world to protect ocean ecosystems, such as coral reefs. In 2008, we partnered with the island nation of Kiribati and Conservation International to create the Phoenix Islands Protected Area. For World Deaf Day, the New England Aquarium, in collaboration with Atomic Hands, opened its doors wide for the deaf community—and WOW, did you all bust those doors down! Deaf kids had the incredible opportunity to see and chat with deaf marine biologists for the very first time. The joy on their faces as they pressed against the tanks? Absolutely priceless! But it didn’t stop there! Deaf adults also had the chance to live out their dreams through our deaf divers, while the deaf marine biologists had the rare opportunity to engage in meaningful discussions about marine-related topics in their native language (ASL). Connections were forged, and lasting memories were created on both sides of the tank. A huge THANK YOU to the deaf community for your unwavering support and for continuously demonstrating how vibrant, curious, and passionate we are about STEM. And a big thank you to the New England Aquarium for providing such an inclusive space. Together, we’re making waves! #STEMinASL #DeafDivers #Aquarium #WorldDeafDay Barbara Spiecker Giovanna Vazquez

Happy Veterinary Technician Week to our top-notch vet techs! 🙌 Our skilled vet techs play a crucial role in keeping our animals safe and healthy, handling everything from drawing blood and taking X-rays to administering medications and assisting in surgeries. They also ensure our Aquarium medical center and our Quincy facility lab run smoothly by running blood work tests and ensuring our veterinarians have everything they need to care for our animals. Thank you to our vet techs for your dedication, compassion, and hard work. We appreciate you! 💙 #NationalVeterinaryTechnicianWeek #HappyVetTechWeek

🎃 October lecture alert! 🌊 Join us on Wednesday, October 23, at 6:30 p.m. in our Simons Theatre for “Greenland Ice Cores Tell Tales of Past Sea Level Change” with Dr. Dorthe Dahl-Jensen. Dr. Dahl-Jensen, a professor of physics of ice, climate, and Earth at the Niels Bohr Institute at the University of Copenhagen, will discuss one of our challenges for the future: adapting to a rising sea level. The discussion will explore the 130,000 to 115,000-year period between glaciations, highlighting research that provides insights into ice sheet responses to climate change and enhances predictions for sea level rise. Learn more + register for the free event: https://bit.ly/4dF0a8N This lecture is made possible by a generous gift from MIT alumnus John H. Carlson to the Lorenz Center in the Department of Earth, Atmospheric, and Planetary Sciences, MIT, and is presented in partnership with the New England Aquarium and the Lowell Institute. #AquariumLecture #LowellLectureSeries

"Building fish weirs serves as a reminder of the history and current presence of the first peoples who originally inhabited those places." Thomas Green, a member of the Massachusett tribe at Ponkapoag, is an artist and educator who highlights Indigenous history and cultural practices. That work includes building fish weirs, structures traditionally used by Indigenous people for fishing in our local waterways. Earlier this year, we were fortunate enough to have Thomas at the Aquarium for our World Ocean Day celebration, teaching event attendees and staff how to build a fishing weir! Our Youth Development teen interns wrapped up another fulfilling summer season. Here are a couple of standout moments. ⬇️ In early August, our Aquarium Youth Development team hosted visitors from the City of Boston's Youth Employment Opportunity Office. Our teen interns discussed the positive impact of working at the Aquarium (many as their first job!) and they showcased how beneficial a youth program can be At the end of August, we held an end-of-year celebration at the Aquarium where summer interns were encouraged to bring their families to celebrate their accomplishments over the past few months. Together, we shared memories, enjoyed an ice cream bar, and heard inspiring words from the teen interns. Thank you to our interns for all of your incredible work! #YouthDevelopment #TeenIntern #SummerIntern

This morning we hosted a Waterfront Wellness Walk on Central Wharf! 🌊 In partnership with MGH Institute of Health Professions and the Coalition for a Resilient and Inclusive Waterfront, this wellness walk welcomed ~30 stroke survivors as part of MGH's Tedy's Team Center of Excellence in Stroke Recovery. Attendees took a stroll along Central Wharf and on the Rose F. Kennedy Greenway with Aquarium staff, and were later welcomed into the Aquarium to enjoy our exhibits. Thank you to everyone who participated in the wellness walk, and thank you to our partners for making it happen! #WaterfrontWellness #CentralWharf #WaterfrontWellnessWalk
