From pest infestations to malfunctioning elevators, they’ve been dealing with unsafe and unsanitary conditions for far too long. Despite a settlement last year, essential repairs were never made, leaving residents in a constant struggle for accountability. Farewell to Our Remarkable Division Director, Jimi Orekoya After 8 years of dedicated service, Jimi Orekoya is moving on to new adventures. His leadership and passion have not only infused our Center with warmth but also significantly expanded our community-centric programming. It’s been a wonderful time, exploring urban gardening in our rooftop garden, learning how to grow fresh produce at home, and enjoying fun activities. 🎉 We are proud to announce that our Executive Director, Rigaud Noel, has been honored in City & State's Above & Beyond: Social Services list! 🙌 Rigaud's work at New Settlement is deeply inspired by his Haitian immigrant parents, who instilled in him the importance of community and support. From launching our food pantry to enhancing college readiness programs and expanding wellness resources, Rigaud is dedicated to ensuring that no family in the Bronx has to struggle the way his family did. Since joining New Settlement in 2020, Rigaud has led a remarkable rebranding campaign and overseen the reopening of our community center. Under his leadership, annual revenue has surged by over 50% to $12 million, allowing us to serve 15,000 patrons each year! Rigaud believes in the power of community partnerships, as seen in our collaborations with local institutions like the Yankees and Montefiore Hospital. His journey started with a youth development internship that sparked his passion for advocacy, and today, he continues to give back as a volunteer firefighter. Celebrating our 2024 YouthBuild Graduates! 🎉 YouthBuild has been serving young adults ages 17.5 to 24, helping them overcome barriers to education and employment. The program provides essential job skills, opportunities for advanced training, and pathways to higher education. They also offer High School Equivalency (HSE) preparation classes through our Department of Education Pathways to Graduation program. We are proud to announce a new partnership between Grand Street Settlement and New Settlement to co-locate Head Start programs at our Community Center! 🌟   Grand Street Settlement will provide Head Start programming for 583 more children and their families, thanks to two new federal grants. Grand Street is known for its amazing youth programs and support for families and older adults. “A child’s zip code should not determine their destiny. Children in the Bronx have five times less access to Head Start programs than children in the Lower East Side,” says Robert Cordero, CEO of Grand Street Settlement.   This collaboration represents a significant milestone for settlement houses, joining forces to provide critical services in The Bronx.
