“Induction has been identified as the most effective practice to increase retention, outperforming salary increases and other professional development.” A new EdResearch for Action brief backs the research behind NTC’s mentoring and induction model. New teachers need thoughtful, quality support, not just good intentions, to help them navigate the “steep learning curve” they encounter as they transition from pre-service to the classroom. What does that look like? The report finds: ✅ “Regular, targeted instructional coaching is the most effective and most researched component of successful induction programs.” ✅ “Coaches who are trained in guiding evidence-based reflections and feedback have a stronger impact on the teaching practices and classroom management of novice teachers than untrained coaches.” Check out the brief, consider how you can better support your new teachers, and get in touch. Mentoring and induction are what we do. Download the brief: https://ow.ly/PUMp50Vj9sF

How can we ensure induction programs and mentoring are responsive to this new reality while leveraging the research foundation to support teacher success? On March 26, hear from Dr. Sharon Contreras, former superintendent of Guilford County Schools; Dr. Kyla Johnson-Trammell, Superintendent of Oakland Unified School District; and Dr. Barbara Jenkins, former superintendent of Orange County Public as they explore practical approaches and bold ideas for creating induction and mentoring systems that meet the needs of today’s (and tomorrow’s) educators and lay the foundation for their long-term professional success. We’re proud to partner with Oakland Unified School District (OUSD) in strengthening teacher development from day one through their careers. Working closely with OUSD's Director of Secondary Instruction, we’ve helped advance coaching in middle and high schools across the district. A huge thank you to KOSHLAND FOUNDATION for their generous support of NTC’s work in the district since 2017, helping OUSD develop a thriving, sustainable teacher induction program and now supporting our coaching partnership. By increasing retention, fostering a positive school climate, and ensuring strong instruction, OUSD continues to build a resilient educator workforce and stable learning environments where kids flourish. Teacher residency programs are one way to cultivate top teaching talent and address shortages. But many successful residents leave if districts don't offer ongoing professional support — quality induction and mentoring — in schools when they become teachers of record. Join NTC on April 16 for our continuing “Future of Mentoring” webinar series to unpack teacher residencies, explore best practices, and dig into what mentoring might look like when designing support for and around this teacher pathway. Now, more than ever. We've read those four words hundreds of times over the last few years. But yes, the teaching profession is at a crossroads. Staffing shortages, declining enrollment, and retention challenges make it clear: we must invest in what works. Mentors and coaches don’t just keep teachers in the classroom. They build a resilient, impactful teaching workforce. This year, our partnerships reached: ⭐️ 30 states ⭐️ 7,800+ schools ⭐️ 274,000 teachers ⭐️ 4.4M students At NTC, we’ve always known — and the research confirms — that connection is the key ingredient in effective teaching, mentoring, and coaching. In this year’s annual report, we talked with teachers, mentors, principals, and program directors from across the country, and they all highlighted the same truth: strong relationships nurture strong schools. Implementing a new curriculum in a large district is no small task. It’s even more complicated when no previous district-mandated curriculum was in place. To address low Algebra 1 pass rates, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools (CMS) mandated the district-wide adoption of the Illustrative Mathematics middle school curriculum. This shift marked a significant departure from previous practices, where schools had autonomy in curriculum selection. NTC worked with the district to develop a flexible implementation plan that included: + Curriculum-specific professional learning for coaches with ongoing reflection and goal setting to personalize support opportunities + Resources and consultation to guide instruction and student-centered PLCs + Unit-based materials to fill content knowledge gaps + Instructional leadership guides for principals + Onboarding for teachers coming new to the district Within CMS, active PLCs supporting curriculum implementation improved significantly, moving from “developing” to “effective” on an NTC-developed tool.
