Congratulations to our Rising New York Road Runners Youth Ambassadors! 🎓🎓🎓 Last week, our Rising NYRR Youth Ambassadors joined us at the NYRR RUNCENTER feat. the New Balance Run Hub to deliver their final speeches after six weeks of speech fundamentals and public-speaking training. In these workshops, participants learned how to effectively share their running story, in support of our vision to build healthier lives and stronger communities through the transformative power of running. After participating in the workshops, Rising NYRR Youth Ambassadors have the opportunity to showcase their newly learned skills while attending press events with the potential to be interviewed by local news outlets, to participate in special events, including the TCS New York City Marathon, and to meet professional athletes and key members of the running industry! We look forward to seeing these rising stars 🌟 at our future events. To see the photo gallery and learn more about this program, head here: https://bit.ly/4fWB1ZB

We’re a few days out from the Percy Sutton #Harlem5K Run and Walk, and all week long, we’re celebrating the race’s namesake, Percy Sutton, a towering figure in NYC culture, politics, and business who helped transform the New York City Marathon into a five-borough event. And that’s just one of his many, many accomplishments. A legendary Black leader, Sutton stands as NYC’s longest-serving Manhattan borough president. He held that office from 1966 to 1977, during which time he vigorously promoted Harlem’s economic development. In 1974 he co-founded Harlem Day, which grew into Harlem Week, one of the northeast’s largest cultural celebrations. This year, Harlem Week marks its 50th anniversary with festivities running through August 18. Sutton attended the New York City Marathon in 1975 and saw the potential for the race—still held solely in Central Park—to become a cultural and economic driver for the city, which was then facing a budget crisis. He played a crucial role in taking the marathon to the streets of all five boroughs the following year and remained a supporter of the New York City Marathon, the running community, and NYRR all his life. Thank you, #PercySutton, for everything you accomplished during your incredible life. To learn more about Percy Sutton, check out our past blog: https://bit.ly/3SBz9ve

We’re halfway through the 2024 session of #NYRRRunfortheFuture, a free six-week program that introduces 11th and 12th grade high school young women to the sport of running. Coming in, our participants did not necessarily self-identify as runners or actively take part in sports. But by working with our NYRR program team and coaching staff, they learn running techniques and goal setting to develop the ability, confidence, and motivation to be active for life. Participants also receive lessons in self-care and wellness that introduce a holistic approach to achieving their fitness goals. They learn about topics like nutrition, mental wellness, body image, and self-awareness, and they develop an understanding of the connection between physical activity and self-care. We require participants to maintain an 80% attendance rate and complete their first 5K (3.1-mile) race at the end of the six weeks. Along the way, they receive New Balance running gear and sneakers, healthy snacks, MetroCards, and fitness kits to help with their training. Please join us in congratulating our participants as they enter the second half of the program 💙! Learn more here: https://bit.ly/3OCyPef
