The 2024 Space Intern Day, hosted by NewSpace Nexus in partnership with the Professional Aerospace Contractors Association of New Mexico (PACA NM), was a huge success and full of energy! Over 100 interns and company representatives participated in a day full of activities, networking, and collaboration. We had the opportunity to hear from leaders throughout the space ecosystem: Arial DeHerrera with NewSpace Nexus, Dena Crain, CLCS, MLIS, CRIS with PACA, Lieutenant Governor Howie Morales and Martina C'deBaca from the Office of the Lieutenant Governor, and Tori Hoffman from Virgin Galactic. They discussed their experiences and the possibilities available in space for the incoming workforce. Exciting News!! Rocket Lab will welcome key government and community leaders in New Mexico on Monday to celebrate a $24 million space investment under the U.S. CHIPS and Science Act. As part of the agreement, Rocket Lab will partner with NewSpace Nexus and contribute $2 million over the next three years to advance the NewSpace Nexus Ignitor and Pathways to the Stars programs. Casey Anglada DeRaad, founder, and CEO of NewSpace Nexus, recently told Albuquerque Business First, "These efforts will advance our vision to grow the space economy from New Mexico for the nation by supporting promising companies with the resources they need, including a space-ready talent pipeline.” For more information on the programs, visit https://lnkd.in/eArJp36H.

Today the University Nanosatellite Program convened with college students at the NewSpace Nexus Launchpad to discuss flight communications software and more in a several day learning workshop.   Michael Starch with NASA's JPL led a presentation on the importance of designing effective and dynamic flight communications software, as well as structure with F' and its specifications and requirements.    Kevin Ortega led a workshop on direct coding requirements for F' and other programs alongside Starch, where students followed along to use in their own projects and future endeavors.   Joseph Melville with the Air Force Research Laboratory works in the Space Vehicles Directorate and Small Satellite Portfolio. Melville found the presentations to be useful and well-structured. "Small Satellite in general is such an expansive field, with fast turnaround for development and rapid iteration for missions and projects. Students help us stick to that core competency, turning extra-liable missions into extra-capable research opportunities." Utilizing students in development is critical-- their repurposed learning builds the future of the space landscape for R&D, testing, and missions, to create actionable innovation for DoD, private companies, and beyond. Instructors want their students to get involved with programs like UNP, as the ideology and software learned and shared is invaluable to business development.   Students Drew, Chem, and Dianna from the University of Central Florida received great information from the discussions. The topics and software discussions that UNP generates here becomes a main segway for students to understand Linux, F', and the intricacies of designing software in a way otherwise unavailable to them. They were among just a few of the many students who are blasting off due to UNP's guidance this week!   Thank you to all of the speakers involved with UNP, providing quality discourse and information for the incoming cohort of space professionals!
