3 May - World Press Freedom Day Today is a day of reflection among media professionals about issues of press freedom and professional ethics. Just as importantly, World Press Freedom Day is also a day of support for media which are targets for the restraint, or abolition, of press freedom. At NewsWyze we support press freedom by specializing in AI tools in languages other than English. Our summarizer Gist can process Farsi, Chinese, Russian, Portuguese, Spanish and any other language you might need. How are publishers around the world dealing with the opportunities and threats that GenAI has to offer? Let's take a look at Sweden! Under the umbrella of the Swedish Publishers' Organisation, Nordic AI Journalism gathered representatives from thirteen Swedish media companies for a series of workshops on the topic of AI transparency.   Their joint insights are shared through seven recommendations on when and how Swedish media consumers should be informed about the use of AI in editorial media products. We are sure this example of Nordic collaboration will inspire publishers from all over the world. The International Center for Journalists (ICFJ) hosted our co-founder Ali Tehrani and Patrick Boehler from Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty in this excellent webinar on Generative AI in Journalism. We have been working with this technology for several years and honoured to share what we have learned about empowering journalism with GenAI around the world. https://lnkd.in/eJbfvqMJ

Our founders Denise Ajiri and Ali Anisi Tehrani were invited by Impress to speak with their Code Committee about AI in publishing. It was a fruitful discussion about what publishers can do to consciously choose technology to assist journalism. The Impress standards code includes clear guidance on human/editorial oversight being absolutely necessary when working with AI tools. This is something NewsWyze also emphasises. AI-assisted reporting is doable but AI reporting is not.  Human supervision cannot be removed from a journalistic process.

Why should you consider training your own model rather than relying on ChatGPT? Ali Anisi Tehrani outlines what we at NewsWyze have learned through training a model with journalistic standards in mind in this article published on International Journalists' Network (IJNet) https://lnkd.in/dn_SmT_H The TLDR: Current models can achieve great performance using only training data from one's organization. Quality examples crafted by journalists have a lot more value and performance than scraping similar content from other sources.
