President at New Visions for Public Schools

Today we had the honor of hosting the kick off for new working groups that will support the Every Child and Family is Known initiative for the upcoming school year. This effort involves matching students in temporary housing with caring adults in their schools who build trusting relationships with families to connect them with critical services to meet their needs. New Visions for Public Schools is leveraging our Portal to connect the scores of schools, agencies and providers with one another to ensure services are coordinated and responsive. We are excited to be building the technology that meets the needs of this moment when our school system is faced with larger numbers of housing insecure families than ever before.

  • We are so excited to announce the launch of the groundbreaking Auto-Pilot program, designed to help high school students in the Bronx obtain their driver’s licenses and access careers in transportation, automotive repair, and other high-demand sectors. This initiative, in partnership with the Consortium for Worker Education, Best Way Driving School, and Hagerty Drivers Foundation, aims to create employment opportunities for underserved youth in New York City. 30% of civil service roles require a driver's license, yet financial constraints obstruct access for many young people who may otherwise be a fit for these pathways. In industries like manufacturing, construction, security, and the postal service, possessing a driver's license is often a distinguishing factor for job applicants. We had an excellent Principals Convening here at New Visions yesterday! Throughout the day, we reviewed network and school level outcomes to inform goals and priorities. We also focused on maximizing alignment and building clarity on the collaborate support offerings from the district and New Visions' teams. It was inspiring to see these leaders coming together to work towards improving student outcomes at their schools. Thank you to Superintendent Dr. Noah Angeles for prioritizing our continued collaboration and leading with passion, energy, and focus. And thank you to all the Principals for your tireless efforts to support students across the city.

  • Eight New Visions partner schools have been piloting new strategies to address chronic absenteeism, including a weekly 1:1 check-in initiative that focuses on improving the consistency of 100% weekly attendance. As the school year comes to a close, these schools have been able to review trends in their attendance data, elevate their learnings, and prepare for next year. • Last week, we held a three day, in-person summer institute to introduce educators to the New Visions Earth & Space Science Curriculum through the use of immersive science experiences. During the institute, participants learned the architecture and navigation of the New Visions science curriculum, and explored how to implement storylines, anchor phenomena, and instructional routines to promote equitable student engagement. Special emphasis was placed on how to use and modify the curriculum to attend to Multilingual Learners, Students with Disabilities, and to Culturally Responsive and Sustaining Education. Thanks to all who joined for these three engaging days!

  • Explore the New Visions Career Directory, empowering NYC students with cost-effective or free postsecondary Career Training Programs, including training, certifications, internships, support services, and job placement assistance! https://lnkd.in/dWhiuE-p Educators can access resources that include lesson plans, career assessments, and worksheets for students for one-on-one advising or for group work. Hear from one of our educators: “I have juniors and seniors in my College Seminar Class login to use the Directory each year. For students that are not interested in going to college or are unsure about college as their pathway, it gives them lots of information at their fingertips to find and explore. There is no way I could give them all these options to search. The students like that they can search by borough, by career type/program, and by free or fee. The seniors use it in the spring to find things to apply to after they have finished their CUNY Application, since all seniors apply to CUNY at our school. The juniors use it in the spring when we are making college lists and investigating pathways before senior year. I am excited about the improvements with more ways to search and more information!” - David Buie, College Advisor at Bronx Leadership Academy II

School and district leaders from across New York City, along with New Visions staff, came together to build their capacity in monitoring and supporting the effective and sustained implementation of New Visions Science materials. It was inspiring to see everyone engaged, learning, and collaborating to enhance science education for students in New York City Public Schools.
