Playing sports teaches us discipline, teamwork, and the power of investing in ourselves. Skills that help prepare us for the future. A Deloitte survey found that 69% of women earning over $100,000 annually in leadership roles played competitive sports, and 85% of women who played sports say the skills they gained were crucial to their professional success.   At New York Life Insurance Company, we recognize that the lessons learned on the field or court don’t just shape careers – they build futures. That’s why we’re proud to support the U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team and empower girls to participate in sports through youth engagements as part of our partnerships with U.S. Soccer Federation and Major League Baseball (MLB). Sports create a foundation for leadership and emphasize the importance of preparation in all aspects of life, including your financial health.   Your game is something you're continuously working on, just as you continuously monitor and adjust your financial strategy. As a former D1 tennis player (Go, Hawks!) and advocate for financial wellness, sports have taught me valuable lessons for preparedness, strategy, and teamwork. For young women who aspire to take their athletic careers as far as they can, setting aside finances early is an investment that pays dividends far beyond the game. Last year at The SheBelieves Summit presented by Deloitte, we had the opportunity to share some tips for financial independence with athletes in attendance.   Successful strategies for athletes at all ages and stages in their sports careers include: - Plan and save, early: Start planning early to get a sense of what expenses will look like as you pursue programming such as travel, uniforms, training, and equipment, which can add up quickly. - Get curious: Talk to older athletes, parents, and coaches to understand and prioritize spending, get tips for cost-effective options--including local leagues--and explore opportunities for teams to waive fees or buy second-hand gear.   This is particularly important at a time when women’s spending power and influence are stronger than ever, and their presence in financial and cultural leadership is undeniable. When players walk out into Arthur Ashe Stadium, they pass a quote from American legend Billie Jean King, which reads: "Pressure is a privilege." They earned the right to play under the stresses of Grand Slam tennis, and champions adjust. Believing in yourself is the first step.   On National Girls & Women in Sports Day, let’s celebrate the athletes, the leaders, and the trailblazers of tomorrow. Together, we can help girls harness the lessons of athletics and build a brighter, more financially secure future.   #NGWSD2025 #SportsLeadership #FinancialPlanning #WomenInSports
