About us

Founded in 1969, Next Door is an award-winning, birth-to-five early learning school based in Milwaukee’s Central City. We focus on the first five years of life because that is when a child’s brain development is most active and when we can have the greatest impact on a child’s future success. Our ultimate goal is to get our students ready for school and ready for life! We offer families full and half-day center-based programming as well as a home-based option. All of our programs provide access to health and dental care, as well as special education and mental health services. Knowing that parents are a child’s first teacher, Next Door offers a number of supportive services for moms and dads. They include: prenatal services, adult education and a fatherhood program. We also have a team of Family Advocates, who work closely with parents to make sure the family has what they need to succeed. Our reach goes even further into the community by leading a partnership program with ten early childhood organizations in Milwaukee County. Next Door staff offers teacher coaching and training on curriculum assessment at each of the partner locations. By working together, we can increase access to safe and high-quality infant and toddler care. Between our own sites and the partner agencies, Next Door currently serves more than 2,000 children and their families. Next Door offers a host of giving and volunteer opportunities throughout the year to support our children and families. • We were thrilled to have four DSHA students volunteering in our classrooms for two weeks! As graduating seniors, Elyse, Catherine, Sylvia, and Cate chose to volunteer with Next Door for their Vocare experiences. It was fantastic having the girls in our art rooms and classrooms to help our teachers and nurture our little ones. Thank you for your dedication to Next Door and our students! We wish you the best in your future endeavors.

  • NEXT DOOR PICTURE OF THE WEEK Creative Perspectives 🌈 Seeing the world through a colorful lens! Our Early Head Start student gets creative with Magna-Tiles during guided play learning, pretending that the magnetic tiles are colorful, stylish eye-glasses. At Next Door, we integrate guided play into our curriculum to support comprehensive child development. Guided play not only sparks imagination but also enhances learning, social skills, and critical thinking.
