65% more startups shut down in 2023 than 2022. This isn’t something we talk much about because it’s not pleasant or simple. Startups shut down for many reasons, and founders who shutter one company often go on to build successful businesses. Case in point: Henry Ward. Our CEO shut down his first company, a robo advisor called Secondsight. A year later, he founded what is now Carta. But first, he had to do the hard and unpleasant work of shuttering Secondsight. Creating employee severance packages, canceling vendor agreements, unwinding customer contracts, filing IRS dissolution tax returns, returning money to shareholders, and so on. It was so fun to sit down for a conversation with Keith Payne, Jr., CEO of Champion Holdings. Keith is a visionary real estate developer in the DC region. Keith and I talked about the importance of relationships, “paying it forward,” and his firm’s vision for the future of real estate in the region. Keith is an inspiring leader who talked openly about his consistent draw to entrepreneurship and how mentors and business opportunities helped him navigate the highs and lows of his other passion, football. Keith played at the University of Virginia and went on to get recruited by the New York Giants. Keith is a great leader and friend of Brown Advisory.
