I hadn’t encountered the term “flextirement” until Richard Eisenberg shared this article. Will it be “the future of work,” as author Neil Costa says? As defined in this piece, it very well could be. Here’s why: ➡As Boomers reach the traditional retirement age, most will have more than one goal. They see this stage of their life as one part purpose, one part passion, and one part paycheck, as Marc Freedman, of CoGenerate (Formerly Encore.org) has said. As Costa writes, “flextirement has everything to do with striking a balance between employees and employers as opposed to flipping the switch from employee to retiree.” That balance will allow older adults to meet all three goals. (Jacquelyn Kung, Paul Irving, Ed Frauenheim and I have written about this topic in the Harvard Business Review, too: https://lnkd.in/eAHFUmDw) ➡As Ken Dychtwald says, many older adults are looking to be useful, not youthful, in their retirement years. A job — whether it’s full-time or part-time — allows them to feel useful, adding to the sense of purpose that makes life worth living. ➡With longevity increases, age 65 isn’t “the beginning of the end” for many Americans. Instead, it’s just the beginning of the next stage. Based on current trends, many older Americans can expect to live another 8,000 days after their 65th birthday. Most of them will not want to spend that time simply crossing off items on their bucket lists until they kick the bucket. Instead, they will want to stay creative, productive and engaged. “Flextirement” allows them to do that by remaining in or returning to the workforce. It’s important to add that “flextirement” would accomplish more than meeting older workers’ needs. It helps everyone. Our economy desperately needs more workers and older workers are a large, underutilized resource. In addition, the research clearly shows that multigenerational teams do better work. In the future — the near future — the companies that recognize this will be the ones that succeed. Firms that enforce arbitrary, mandatory retirement ages will suffer. Those that offer workers in their 60s, 70s and 80s a chance to contribute and a good amount of flexibility will win. cc: Vanessa Liu, Sugarwork

Anne Tumlinson, founder of Daughterhood and CEO of ATI Advisory, a policy research and consulting group, said that the elder care system in the United States is underfunded, leading to insufficient choices for those who can afford care. Even families with financial resources struggle to find quality care, highlighting the systemic challenges embedded in the current structure. Private markets alone cannot address the complexities of elder care, said Tumlinson, who was speaking at a webinar held to discuss the KFF Health News and New York Times joint series, “Dying Broke,” an investigation into America’s long-term care crisis.
