NICWA works to eliminate child abuse and neglect by strengthening our families, tribes, and the laws that protect them.
About us
Founded as a grassroots organization in Portland, Oregon nearly 40 years ago, NICWA works to support the safety, health, and spiritual strength of American Indian and Alaska Native children along the broad continuum of their lives. We support tribes in building the capacity to prevent child abuse and neglect through positive systems change at the state, federal, and tribal levels. We are the most comprehensive source of information on Native child welfare and continue to meet the evolving needs of Native communities across Indian Country through training, technical assistance, and advocacy. Please help us protect our youngest citizens.

Happy Indigenous Peoples' Day! Each strand braided into our hair is a story of the generational love, strength, and traditional knowledge passed down from our ancestors. With each generation comes a new braid that is intertwined with the hopes and dreams of our people, creating a pathway of knowledge and connectedness. Today and every day we honor the legacy of those who walked before us as we continue the path toward creating more opportunities for our people to thrive and experience Indigenous joy ❤️

NICWA is in community at Oneida Nation, who is our tribal nation partner for Bridging Systems for Kinship Families Initiative. Today, we are focusing on utilizing the Relational Worldview to assess systems change to benefit our current work and future outcomes. We’re focusing on what our cultures tells us about how to care for our children and relatives. We will continue to share more about our collaborative work in the future! ❤️🪶 Grandfamilies & Kinship Support Network

Today, September 30th, is recognized as National Day for Truth and Reconciliation also known as Orange Shirt Day. Today we hold in our hearts the young Indigenous children who never returned home and the survivors of residential and boarding schools. As the truth continues to come to light, we hold space for healing and demand justice. Relatives, we encourage you to take care of yourself today. Friends of Indigenous people, we ask that you check on your friends and take the time to learn more about how you can be an ally. #orangeshirtday #everychildmatters
