Last Thursday we gathered advocates, peer service providers, and community leaders for Solutions not Silos, an event dedicated to breaking down barriers in New Jersey’s recovery support network. This event, organized by our Organizational Collaboration Subcommittee, fostered collaboration through panel discussions and workshops focused on enhancing partnerships among service providers. Attendees explored new strategies to create a more inclusive, peer-led support system, with insights from people in recovery central to every conversation.

About us
Founded in 2017, the NJ-CARS mission is to provide an inclusive platform to celebrate the hope of recovery, promote the value of individuals with lived experience, and to incorporate and strengthen recovery support services across the continuum of care for substance use disorders throughout New Jersey. We stand together with New Jersey constituents, a united front to help lift up people in recovery and their families. We are here to make sure that any New Jersey families struggling with addiction have access to support within their own communities. It is not enough for peers to be front line workers in recovery support. Individuals in recovery should be empowered to take the lead in developing, implementing, and governing these services. By coming together, we strengthen our voice to ensure we are heard by decision-makers, collateral service providers, and, most importantly, individuals struggling with substance use disorders and their loved ones. Membership is open to any individual or organization wishing to be involved in supporting addiction recovery services. NJ-CARS has created a web-based clearinghouse to allow individuals, families, treatment providers, and other stakeholders to easily identify the available community-based, non-clinical addiction recovery supports in their communities. Please note that all submissions will be reviewed by the NJ-CARS advisory committee before being added to the resource map. NJ-CARS reserves the right to deny any applicant organization/provider from being added to its resource map. “To pray you open your whole self To sky, to earth, to sun, to moon To one whole voice that is you. And know there is more That you can’t see, can’t hear; Can’t know except in moments Steadily growing, and in languages That aren’t always sound but other Circles of motion. Like eagle that Sunday morning Over Salt River. Circled in blue sky In wind, swept our hearts clean With sacred wings. We see you, see ourselves and know That we must take the utmost care And kindness in all things. Breathe in, knowing we are made of All this, and breathe, knowing We are truly blessed because we Were born, and die soon within a True circle of motion, Like eagle rounding out the morning Inside us. We pray that it will be done In beauty. In beauty.” Eagle Poem, by Joy Harjo (Indigenous member of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation and is the first Native American to be named the United States Poet Laureate.) This poem is a prayer that draws upon the image of an eagle soaring, symbolizing a connection with nature and the spirit world. Harjo writes about embracing life and the cycles of existence, urging the reader to "pray with the earth." Happy Indigenous Peoples’ Day 🧡
