Coral conservationists convene for #CoralReef resilience! The National Marine Sanctuary Foundation was proud to support a coral spawning workshop with SECORE International, Inc. at the University of Guam Marine Laboratory in late July. Ten different organizations from American Samoa, Hawaii, the Northern Mariana Islands, and Guam, all participated in the workshop to learn technical skills for larval propagation and to build partnerships for reef resilience for future generations.   Funding for this project was provided by the NOAA Fisheries Office of Habitat Conservation Restoration Center. You never know where networking will take you—for Abby Lucas, it brought her 130 miles out to sea! Abby is a Master’s student in Southern Connecticut State University’s Integrative Biological Diversity Program. Through networking, she connected with Fish Biologist Yuan Liu, who leads the eDNA program at our Northeast Fisheries Science Center. Yuan invited her to join a research cruise to conduct eDNA sampling aboard the R/V Connecticut, contributing to her career success, and providing credit toward her degree. Read about Abby's time conducting research in the Northeast Canyons and Seamounts Marine National Monument, and how it has inspired her: https://bit.ly/3XaVt1y Credit: NOAA Fisheries/Yuan Liu

The Your Shores program at the Phillip and Patricia Frost Museum of Science is helping Miami high school students from diverse backgrounds to become the next generation of marine scientists! “It’s hard for a lot of students to see themselves in the marine science field and in science in general," explains Giselle Garcia, project director for the Upward Bound Math and Science program. “It’s not just because most scientists don't look like them or come from similar backgrounds, but because there are so many barriers.” The Your Shores program seeks to fix that. The program provides students with dive certifications, habitat restoration and research experience, and college preparation. Students also get opportunities to participate in internships related to the field. We're proud to support the Your Shores program in lowering the barrier to entry for future marine scientists in Miami. Happy #NationalOysterDay from our Chesapeake Bay Office! Stephanie Westby works as the Chesapeake Bay Oyster Restoration Program Manager for our Office of Habitat Conservation’s Restoration Center. Fun Fact: Stephanie grew up sailing on the Chesapeake! She spent years working and living on sailing vessels before she finally moved ashore and decided to help improve the health of our coastal areas, which brought her to oyster restoration. She's inspired by our work with oysters, recognizing how critical the reef habitats they create are to other species, as well as their water filtering capabilities. Shucks, we’re all smiles that August 5 is National Oyster Day! Earlier this summer, NOAA Fisheries and the U.S. Department of Agriculture Agricultural Research Service launched a state-of-the-art Northeast Oyster Breeding Center. Scientists there will be working on breeding disease-resistant oysters that are resilient in the face of current and changing environmental conditions in the Northeast. Pictured here is our Assistant Administrator Janet Coit with research geneticist and project leader Sheila Stiles and biological science technician Isaiah Mayo. Both Sheila and Isaiah work at our Milford Lab, where the new Northeast Oyster Breeding Center is also located: https://bit.ly/4d28RdU

Collaboration is key to our success when restoring habitat. John Barco, a marine habitat resource specialist in our Office of Habitat Conservation, knows this well. John works with scientists from NOAA’s Assessment and Restoration division and other NOAA line offices, state and federal agencies, as well as oil and chemical companies to develop, plan, and implement restoration projects across the Gulf of Mexico. His work often exemplifies how collaboration and partnerships can result in meaningful restoration. In celebration of #HabitatMonth, John reflected on some of the projects he's been part of, as well as the parts of his job he finds most rewarding: https://bit.ly/3Stq0VL Credit: John Barco, NOAA Fisheries #WorkAtNOAAFisheries #Restoration

What happens after a habitat restoration project? That's where ecologists like David Bruce come in! David works in our Chesapeake Bay office as principal investigator for fish community monitoring for the Poplar Island Ecosystem Restoration Project. He looks at how fish abundance and diversity of marsh resident and transient species vary between restored salt marshes and natural reference marsh creeks He has spent 12 years with us here at NOAA, and also worked as a fisheries scientist in the private sector, academia, and several state agencies.
