💡 Did you know that throughout our 100+ year history, Bell Labs researchers invented the maser a precursor to the laser? On this day in 1960, Arthur Schawlow and consultant Charles H. Townes (pictured) received a patent for the invention of the laser based on their research on optical masers. Back in 1956, Townes accepted a consulting job with Bell Labs and stopped in to see Schawlow, his brother-in-law, who had been there for about five years. The two had collaborated in the past and agreed to work together on extending the maser (microwave amplification by stimulated emission of radiation) principle to the optical regions of the spectrum. After months of work, Schawlow and Townes applied for a patent through Bell Labs and, on March 22, 1960, were granted U.S. Patent #2,929,922. 💡 Bell Labs has championed women for over 100 years. However, in the broader STEM and R&D fields, there's still much work to do to create gender equality. A key part of this struggle includes acknowledging the data on gender inequalities. For our Women's History Month awareness campaign, we've searched through the UNESCO Institute for Statistics for data on women in STEM and R&D to see the numbers.
