Public Service Award: This award recognizes a distinguished example of meritorious public service by a newspaper to its local community, reflecting exceptional courage or enterprise. Hugh Morton Photographer of the Year: The award recognizes a photographer’s body of work for the contest year. Mark Binker Public Notice Award : A news article or series of articles triggered by the publication of a public notice in a newspaper. Duke University/Green-Rossiter Award for Distinguished Newspaper Work in Higher Education Reporting : Sponsored by Duke University in cooperation with NCPA, the basis for the award is coverage of higher education through editorials, news or feature articles, photos or cartoons. Media and the Law Awards of Excellence: Sponsored by the North Carolina Bar Association, this award recognizes outstanding legal reporting. Henry Lee Weathers Freedom of Information Award : Originally created through a generous donation by the family of Henry Lee Weathers, former owner/publisher of The Star (Shelby), and NCPA president 1981-82, this award honors journalists or newspapers for exceptional work in advancing or upholding the cause of open government and freedom of information.
