In PLANSPONSOR's recent feature, "Out of the Fog," Managing Partner Jim Scheinberg, CIMA®, PRP discusses how plan sponsors can gain clarity on their fiduciary role. Jim highlights how an objective evaluation of the plan, which includes fiduciary education, can facilitate committee alignment and comprehension. "A good time to do an objective evaluation of the plan, including fiduciary education, is if the committee team had substantial turnover and most of the new members did not make the decision to hire the recordkeeper or the adviser who put the investment policy in place. It is a way to ensure that everyone is aligned with, and looking forward with, the plan sponsor and is understanding who is doing what." "Having objectivity is a really important thing," Jim continues. "If you're going to have somebody come in and do that interpretation...make sure they don't have a horse in the race." In an article for FundFire, Managing Partner Jim Scheinberg, CIMA®, PRP discussed Aon's recent acquisition of NFP with reporter Sam Heller. Specifically, Jim noted that Fiducient currently has a deal in which it runs independent from NFP, but it remains to be seen if the firm and other ancillary businesses will be allowed to operate independently after the deal with Aon is finalized. Fiducient and Aon had previously been seen as “two very different shops with two very different approaches,” and many clients had chosen Fiducient as a consultant due in part to its independence, said Jim. “If that becomes watered down, there may be some clients of Fiducient that are no longer comfortable, or at least will be evaluating whatever the new combined entity and output is,” Scheinberg said.
