A key advantage of using polyurethane-lined steel pipe for sanitary sewer applications? The gasketed joint, which provides a bottle-tight seal without a reduction in lining thickness at the joint connection. The uniform lining thickness across the system ensures a long service life, while the leak-free joint prevents the loss of gray water over the life of the pipeline. Ductile iron pipe (DIP), on the other hand, requires a reduction in lining thickness across the joint, which may lead to durability issues. This is due to the casting process, where DIP is formed in a mold with fixed joint dimensions. There is limited tolerance available, and when a 40 mm lining is used, the gasketed joint cannot seal properly without compromising the lining thickness. In the case of engineered steel pipe, we simply make the pipe a little larger to allow for uniform lining thickness. Plus, our lining is factory-applied, and no field coating is required. Check out this 96-inch fitting being lowered into a 30-foot deep shaft adjacent to the freeway as part of the Perris Valley Pipeline I-215 Crossing. Our team fabricated this cement mortar lined and coated steel fitting at our facility in Adelanto, CA. It will connect approximately 3,000 LF of 96-inch water transmission carrier pipe through 120-inch Permalok trenchless casing pipe, also supplied by Northwest Pipe Company.
