"The age of biology is here." In an interview today with Danish publication Berlingske, our colleague Jacob Paulsen, EVP of Food & Beverage Biosolutions, shares his perspective on the future of food: "The demand for biosolutions is only increasing. Addressing global sustainability and health, we can help transform the way we produce food, including preventing and reducing food waste. It's not about producing entirely new food products, more so that the food that consumers know and love can be improved and produced more sustainably," he says. According to the article, more than 2 billion people are consuming food and beverage products that have been made with enzymes, cultures or microbes from Novonesis. Jacob believes biosolutions can provide answers to some of the most pressing challenges: "In the world, we may have upwards of one billion people starving. Within the next 25 years, we need to feed an additional two billion people. And the climate footprint from food production is already unsustainable today. Everyone should agree that we need to do something about this - consumers, food producers and policymakers alike." How can biosolutions improve taste and texture in plant-based food? Our colleague David Joiner, Director of New Foods and Protein, North America, was interviewed by FoodNavigator at the Plant-Based World Expo in New York City. "Our biosolutions come from nature and biology. They are safe, environmentally friendly and help to provide nutritious products. For instance, our Vertera ProBite technology helps to bring the protein together, regardless of the protein source, so that the end product has the right texture and 'bite' that the consumers expect," he says. In the article and video clip from the conference, David talks more about the application of our biosolutions, and how cross-linking amino acids and proteins like pea and soy can reduce the need for additives, making the products more affordable, nutritious and eco-friendly. Global Bioeconomy Summit in Nairobi, Kenya Our colleague Morten Enggaard Rasmussen, EVP of People & Stakeholder Relations, represented Novonesis and was among the speakers yesterday in Nairobi for this year's Global Bioeconomy Summit (GBS2024). He shared how our biosolutions can contribute to solving many of the current challenges both locally and globally, transforming our food systems towards more sustainable food production, reducing food waste and getting more from less when it comes to agriculture. "We know that solutions rooted in biology can help solve humanity’s biggest challenges. Since we began in our legacy companies more than a century ago, this has been our guide. Now more than ever, the world needs change. And with biosolutions, the possibilities for transformation are endless," he said. The theme of this year's summit was “One Planet – Sustainable Bioeconomy Solutions for Global Challenges”. Leaders of bioeconomy from all hemispheres were gathered, highlighting a sustainable bioeconomy as the key to decarbonisation and sustainable transition to less fossil fuel dependent, rural and urban green economies, while building resilient and sustainable food systems, reversing biodiversity loss and creating jobs. #biosolutions #bioeconomy #novonesis

Calling for climate action: "We have the answers already in nature." As Co-Chair of the Alliance of CEO Climate Leaders, our CEO Ester Baiget is calling for urgent action to combat climate change. In a video interview by World Economic Forum, she says that ramping up existing nature-based biosolutions could cut global emissions by 8%. "Biosolutions are the answers of the future. The technology is ready, and the capabilities to be bold already exist. We are moving in the right direction, but we're just not moving fast enough," she says. In an open letter ahead of #COP29, the Alliance of CEO Climate Leaders is advocating for governments and the private sector to enhance collaboration to deliver on the Paris Agreement goals, closing the emissions reduction ambition gap by 2050 to limit global warming to 1.5°C. The Alliance of CEO Climate Leaders represents $4 trillion in revenues and 12 million employees across the world. Meet our colleague Anne: Food engineer, beer enthusiast and explorer Today is World Food Day, and for this occasion we share the story of one of our colleagues who works on solutions that help dairy producers reduce food loss and waste. Anne Nordmark Murmann is a Global Marketing and Business Development Manager working in the field of bioprotection for dairy products. Our biosolutions in this space enhance food cultures to extend the shelf life of yogurt, for instance. "Dairy products are characterized by high turnover, fragile supply chains and relatively short shelf lives. That makes them significant contributors to global food waste and losses. Remarkably, up to 17% of all yogurt is wasted annually in the EU. Our food cultures enhance the bioprotective effects of traditional fermentation by delaying spoilage from yeast and molds in dairy products. These cultures naturally extend shelf life and reduce food waste without the need for artificial preservatives," she says. Anne is motivated by the inspiration she gets from working with many talented colleagues: "Novonesis is home to many great and interesting colleagues with varied backgrounds and functions. Even after years of studying and working in the food industry, I am continually inspired by my colleagues’ enthusiasm and what can be achieved with biosolutions," she says. Anne's background has given her a special enthusiasm for beer brewing: "I am a food engineer with a Ph.D. in food chemistry, specializing in flavor stability in beer. My research focused on the impact of enzymes and yeast types on oxidative stability. Producing beer and analyzing its stability through both analytical chemistry and sensory evaluations resulted in some truly enjoyable tastings." Outside of work, Anne likes exploring by travelling with her family and friends as well as diving into the world of fantasy games and live-action role playing with her children. #worldfoodday #biosolutions #teamnovonesis
