Happening this Wednesday, Oct 30 at 1 pm! Check out this public talk with artist Lauren Bon at California State University-Dominguez Hills Art Gallery. As a part of Pacific Standard Time, Lauren Bon and METABOLIC STUDIO are showing “Portable Wetland for Southern California,” a conceptual artwork and experimental proposal for ecological remediation. The piece is part of “Brackish Water,” an exhibition at California State University, Dominguez Hills in South Los Angeles, where local rivers have been transformed into concrete channels, and where industrial contamination and ecological racism have plagued surrounding communities for generations. Happening TODAY at 2 pm! Spend your afternoon at the Hammer Museum listening to a conversation between Ron Finley and Glenn Kaino. Self-described “Gangsta Gardener” Ron Finley advocates for a revolutionary revitalization of communities through teaching the fundamental value of growing your own food. His work is featured in, “Breath(e): Toward Climate and Social Justice,” the Hammer Museum’s current exhibition that focuses on environmental art practices that address the climate crisis and anthropogenic disasters and their inescapable intersection with issues of equity and social justice. Conceptual artist and co-curator of “Breath(e)” Glenn Kaino works in sculpture, painting, filmmaking, performance, installation, and large-scale public work, as well as instigating collaborations with other modes of culture—ranging from tech to music to political organizing. Together they will discuss how simple acts of coalition can have massive impacts. Check out the opening reception for “Digital Capture: Southern California and the Pixel-Based Image World” at the California Museum of Photography and Culver Center of the Arts at the UC Riverside California Museum of Photography, happening October 26th from 3-6 pm! This ambitious exhibition, spanning six decades (1962–2020s), investigates the history and creative uses of digital imaging technology, from the genesis of digital imaging in Southern California research laboratories during the Cold War and space race of the 1960s to the ubiquity of digital media in our contemporary world. The exhibition and accompanying publication narrate the ideological shifts that occurred as digital technologies were adopted for artistic ends. Conceptually organized into themes exploring issues of agency, representation, culpability, and connection, “Digital Capture” features more than 40 artists working across several technological, computing, and imaging media - including #LUMINEX artist Refik Anadol!
