Michigan's rural schools are shrinking, and need help from the state. Arsen's study into rural schools found that many Michigan rural schools face similar challenges: recruiting and retaining teachers amid a shortage, serving students with mental health needs, broadband access that extends to student homes, funding and fulfilling state reporting requirements, which can feel onerous for districts with small staffs. Strengthening these schools, he argues, would benefit everyone. "They are one of the largest, if not the largest, employer in every rural school district, and they're providing a significant source of relatively stable jobs for those with and without college degrees," he said. "And, of course, they prepare young people for critically important jobs in a prosperous local economy." Read more in Detroit Free Press: https://lnkd.in/gJhkauAg

Happy Fall! We've been busy at The Rural Educator this year, and we want to share some updates with you: 💻 First, you'll notice the journal is moving to a largely online-only format, though we'll still continue to mail print copies to libraries. This shift will give us more space to print full articles (including tables and figures) in our print version, while publishing full articles cohesively online. This will also give us the opportunity to be more flexible in our online publishing. 🏅 Second, thanks to Devon Brenner's indexing work, and to your citations of our published articles, Scimago now ranks TRE as a Tier II journal! We have had over 32,000 downloads of TRE articles since January 2024. 🌐 Third, we are working to update our website guidelines and email communications for reviewers and authors as we continue to improve our communications processes. 📸 Fourth, in addition to our presence on Facebook, you can now follow TRE on Instagram @TheRuralEducatorNREA 🔍 Finally, we are always looking for new reviewers, and are especially in need of reviewers interested in reviewing mental health submissions and submissions by international authors. If you're interested, please provide your information here: https://lnkd.in/gs8TzFCw Many thanks from the TRE editorial team for your continued support of NREA's official journal!

Do you have personal and/or professional interest, background, and/or relationship with young adult and/or middle grades literature? What about rural experiences and spaces? The Committee for the Whippoorwill Book Award for Rural Young Adult and Middle Grades Literature launches this call for self-nominations to join the committee. The award recognizes young adult and middle grades literature that portrays the complexity of rural living by dispelling stereotypes and demonstrating diversity among rural people. They are looking for three (3) new committee members to join a team of teachers, scholars, and authors to serve a three-year term. Committee members review submitted titles throughout the year, so the capacity to review several young adult and middle grade titles is important. They are especially interested in self-nominations from those with diverse rural perspectives in terms of region, class, race, gender, religion/spirituality, and sexuality. Educators are encouraged to apply. Additional information can be found on the Whippoorwill Book Award website: https://lnkd.in/gb3gD35G If you are interested in serving on the committee, please complete this Google Form by November 4, 2024: https://lnkd.in/gDVTYrbz
