While ILA and USMX have reached a temporary agreement, and the strike has ended, one glaring issue remains—automation.
US East Coast and Gulf Coast Port Strike: Temporary Resolution and Future Uncertainties

The International Longshoremen's Association (ILA) and the UNITED STATES MARITIME ALLIANCE LIMITED (USMX) have reached a tentative agreement on wages, ending the three-day strike that affected East Coast and Gulf Coast ports. However, this resolution is incomplete, as the critical issue of automation remains unresolved. While USMX appears to have conceded on wages, the lack of agreement on automation suggests we may see a repeat of this situation in January 2025 when the extended contract expires. At that time, the ILA may have less political leverage due to the conclusion of the 2024 election, potentially increasing the likelihood of Biden invoking the Taft-Hartley Act to force longshoremen back to work. However, this reduced leverage might also motivate the ILA to take more drastic action, feeling they have less to lose. The automation debate is particularly contentious. While it has the potential to eliminate American jobs, a lack of automation could make U.S. ports less competitive in the global marketplace. This issue represents the final, most challenging aspect of the negotiations, where the two sides are furthest apart. Wage Agreement - A tentative 61% wage increase over six years has been agreed upon. - This raises average hourly wages from $39 to approximately $63. Contract Extension - The master contract has been extended until January 15, 2025. - This extension allows for further negotiations on outstanding issues. Immediate Effects - All current job actions have ceased. - Work covered by the Master Contract has resumed at affected ports. Unresolved Issues - Automation remains a contentious topic and is yet to be resolved. - The ILA opposes automation that could replace jobs or historical work functions. Implications for Customers - Immediate resumption of port operations will help clear the backlog of anchored ships. - This should alleviate potential supply chain disruptions in the coming weeks. Potential for Future Disruptions - The unresolved automation issue could lead to another confrontation in January 2025. - Customers should consider this risk in their long-term planning. Possible Cost Implications - The significant wage increase may lead to higher shipping costs over time. - We advise customers to factor this into their budgeting and pricing strategies. NTG Supply Chain Solutions remains committed to providing updates and support throughout this evolving situation. We will continue to work closely with our partners to minimize any potential disruptions to your organization’s supply chain. We recommend customers: - Review their supply chain strategies in light of this development. - Consider building in additional buffer time for shipments through affected ports. - Stay informed about ongoing negotiations and potential future disruptions. Our team is available to discuss how these changes may impact your specific logistics needs and to help develop mitigation strategies as necessary.
