I am beyond ecstatic to be a part of this announcement: San Diego has a new $50M venture capital fund. I have been a longtime admirer of Prebys Foundation. The history of their efforts can be seen far and wide across our region.  They've made our lives better. And the Prebys Ventures Impact Fund is further demonstration of their leadership: they're innovative, and they execute. With this fund, we are going to help advance economic prosperity, across the megaregion, for future generations of families. NuFund Venture Group has taken an early opportunity to invest in Resolute Science, a groundbreaking biotech company pioneering a first-in-class pan-cancer therapeutic platform. Their innovative approach, targeting tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) rather than traditional cancer cells, has the potential to transform the treatment of aggressive and hard-to-treat solid tumors. The Resolute Science team, led by Faith Barnett MD, PhD, FAANS and ANDRE BASBAUM, has demonstrated a remarkable commitment to advancing oncology therapeutics, and their preclinical data is incredibly promising. Their work could open new doors for patients who have run out of treatment options. Our new paper is fresh out of the oven published on arXiv! At Vela Partners, we're excited about the intersection of large language models (LLM) and verifiable methodologies such as machine learning (ML) models. Te, our research intern from the University of Oxford who won second prize in National Math Olympiads in China, co-invented a new technique with us. We combine LLMs with hierarchical clustering and decision trees to build explainable personas. Essentially, this is a pursuit towards `explainable classification`; hence `explainable AI`. Unsurprisingly, we applied this to our core business; venture capital (VC). The success rates among founder clusters is stark. A serial entrepreneur is 22x more likely to succeed compared to an early career entrepreneur. This informs how accelerators and VCs should think through their portfolio diversification, ownership targets and valuation premiums. Excited about building more explainability among founding teams and markets, but more importantly, we hope this enables the community to use it for beyond VC. The paper is in the comments section.
