Check out some recent work pulled together by University of St. Thomas on the use of Soy Protein Hydrolysate, HSP-A, in Serum-Free CHO-K1 Cell Culture Media Although FBS provides many benefits to cell culture, it has significant drawbacks such as lot-to-lot variability, ethical concerns, and risks contamination from animal diseases3. As an alternative to FBS supplementation to basal media we have explored the use of plant peptones as an effective supplement for CHO cell culture propagation. Plant peptones provide the essential amino acids, vitamins, and peptides necessary for cell growth and offer a promising alternative to FBS for CHO cell growth. Another great Society for Industrial Microbiology and Biotechnology Annual Conference! We appreciate the hard work from the team at University of St. Thomas. Thomas Marsh Laura Clysdale Catherine Sothy Elise Modjeski are absolutely crushing it. Not only are they helping show the benefits of Nu-Tek's products, they're also getting a taste of real world challenges in industry. We enjoy the partnership and look forward to working on more projects together!
This summer, I continued my biochemistry research at the University of St. Thomas. One highlight of the summer was the opportunity to attend the Society for Industrial Microbiology and Biotechnology (SIMB) Annual Meeting in Boston. My project, ‘Assessment of Animal Origin-Free Media on Bacteriocin Output in Lactic Acid Bacteria’ focused on growth and metabolite optimization of lactic acid bacteria in plant-derived media. Our media replaces traditional animal-based components with plant-derived peptones provided by our partner, Nu-Tek BioSciences. Animal-origin free media is crucial in reducing risk of biohazardous animal contaminants, minimizing batch-to-batch variability and addressing sustainability concerns in bioprocessing industries. My time at SIMB allowed me to engage with experts in the field to gain new insight about the latest advancements, as well as present my findings. I would like to thank my advisor, Thomas Marsh, Nu-Tek BioSciences, and my lab-mates Catherine Sothy and Elise Modjeski for their support.

Successful Replacement of Animal Derived Components with Plant Derived Protein Hydrolysates in Media for the Growth of Probiotic Bacteria Traditional media for propagation of lactic acid bacteria (e.g. deMan, Rogosa, and Sharpe (MRS) and M17) include complex undefined animal derived components such as beef extracts, casein hydrolysates and porcine hydrolysates. There is a growing demand and need for production of probiotics that are not reliant on animal derived components. This study shows the soy protein hydrolysate, HSP-A, can replace all animal derived components in MRS and M17 formulations #partnership #distribution #bioscience #pharma #pharmaceuticalindustry #biotechinnovation #biotech #biotechnology #cellculture #pharmaceutical #ingredients
