The number one question I got asked at this year’s #ClimateWeekNYC was, “how does someone make the leap to working on sustainability?” Truth be told, working in any purpose-driven field, is a deeply personal journey that combines emotional and practical exploration.   As a recruiter, I’ve talked with hundreds of purpose-driven candidates and many are drawn to climate work after having a transformative experience. This isn’t necessarily a big “I want to save the world” revelation. Instead, it’s often a spiritual or inner change that expands outward.   Meredith Saucier and I were able to explore this emotional aspect of climate work during a couple sessions last week. In “Climate of Emotions” facilitated by Joshua Freedman we explored “emotions as data.” As Joshua noted, emotions can help tell us what we truly value.   More and more, people are experiencing climate-change-related extreme weather events, political turmoil, and economic shifts that threaten their families, personal safety, and livelihood. Understanding these connections between climate change, your feelings, and what you value can be foundational to getting involved. As Solitaire Townsend of Futerra commented at this year’s Solutions House, “let whatever emotion that fuels you, drive your action.”   Of course, building your practical skills is a necessary complement to this emotional work. Thankfully, any job can be a climate job. Sustainability is finally going mainstream and that means there are opportunities to contribute in fields ranging from operations and compliance to marketing and design. 🍃   If you already love what you do, consider exploring how your current role connects with climate solutions (tips below). But if you don’t love what you do, this may be a great time to explore a career switch! 🔄 Whichever camp you’re in, here are some helpful resources we’ve found to help you upskill:   🌳 Project Drawdown’s Job Function Guides break down how 12 different job types, from HR to engineering, can help drawdown emissions. https://bit.ly/4eIbP8p     🧬Life-Centered Design School hosts a course that teaches participants how to design with nature, with tools like human and non-human personas. https://bit.ly/3XKdP8G   ⛰️ The Climatebase Fellowship helps participants “accelerate” their climate career with education, community, and support for founders. https://bit.ly/4eqo4Gs   📖 Coursera has hundreds of sustainability courses from respected institutions like Stanford University, Lund University, and Arizona State University. https://bit.ly/3YiJnnP   🧮Fundamentals of Sustainability Accounting teaches CPAs and other finance-related business professionals understand “the link between sustainability and financial performance.” https://bit.ly/3zEAco5   If you have more questions, as a job seeker or as a company that wants to hire for purpose, let me know. I'm here to help!     #sustainability #climatechange #climateweeknyc #careerchange

It’s time to go *all in* for climate solutions. 💪    That’s the message all over Climate Week NYC 2024 🌃. This year’s conference is focused on how we can accelerate inclusive change and take sustainability solutions mainstream, while also creating a new culture of accountability.    Obviously, technical and communications innovations are getting plenty of (deserved) airtime this year, but as you know, sustainability isn’t just about installing more solar panels or running memorable ad campaigns. It’s about people. This week, we’re learning a lot about how organizations can be transparent with, and accountable to customers, employees, clients and partners, citizens, and other stakeholders about their organizational role in climate change.   1️⃣ We started the conference with a kickoff breakfast from Clean Creatives and Pace Public Relations.  They noted that advertising has been a big contributor to climate change and pollution thanks to the industry’s long standing alliances with fossil fuels companies to spread a pro-fossil fuel agenda.    And that’s where accountability comes in—individuals and a multitude of groups like Clean Creatives, Pace PR, and Ethical Agency Alliance are calling for agencies to disclose any fossil fuel polluters on their client lists.  When an agency makes campaigns for Shell while also accepting awards for their sustainability leadership, it erodes public trust while propping up bad actors for our planet.   2️⃣ The importance of accountability and justice also came up in a talk on Environmental Justice and Climate Tech moderated  by Audrey Serene A. from Our Climate with panelists Roishetta Sibley Ozane, M.S. of Vessel Project of Louisiana and Morgan King of West Virginia Citizen Action. Roishetta and Morgan shared their experiences as organizers in communities that have long been targeted by heavy polluters, earning these areas monikers like “Cancer Alley”. These same communities are now having untested climate tech facilities for projects like carbon removal foisted upon them.  While carbon removal has its potential, many of these projects are being sited without local input, adequate safeguards against negative consequences like harmful noise and water pollution, or any accountability for the history of wrongdoing by projects claiming the community benefits (which are often nowhere to be seen). If climate action is going to go mainstream, and more importantly, help others, we have to make sure folks who are living in the midst of experimental solutions have the opportunity to receive ongoing and transparent information and be taken seriously as stakeholders. Roishetta notes, “the people closest to the problem are the people closest to the solution.” As an organization that truly is in a “people business,” we love seeing this emphasis on accountability and justice. To all the speakers above, thank you for your time and insights! 👏   #climateweeknyc #climateaction #dei #environmentaljustice

It’s Bisexual Awareness Week now through Monday! Did you know that Millennial and Gen Z LGBTQ+ employees are more likely to identify as bisexual/ pansexual than any other queer identity? However, according to a UCLA study, these employees are also less likely than their gay and lesbian colleagues to be out at work. Erin Uritus of Out & Equal notes that this can be a real challenge for employers. While every employee is entitled to their privacy, employers should also make sure that they cultivate an environment where it’s safe to be openly bi. Without this safety, organizations may struggle to avoid internal-culture-related turnover. Being supportive of your bi/pan employees may look like: 1. “Ensuring bi+ representation in employee resource groups and creating resources and programming that reflect bi+ identities.” 2. “HR professionals should make sure that benefits and internal policies are inclusive of these folks and avoid assuming that someone is straight just because their partner is the opposite gender.” 3. “Companies should also carefully consider the message they're sending externally, whether by publicly celebrating BisexualVisibility Day in September and Pansexual Visibility Day in May or ensuring that bi+ identities are represented in the advertisements they create.” #lgbtq #humanresourcesmanagement #millennial #genz

Writing this piece on bi+ inclusion in the workplace for The Advocate was very personal to me. I have experienced biphobia and being an out bi+ CEO who is leading an organization dedicated to LGBTQ+ inclusion and belonging, I feel a unique responsibility in sharing my story to raise awareness and drive change.   Simply put, we cannot forget about bi+ people who represent the largest single-identity group within the LGBTQ+ community in the US.   Read more about my journey and my tips for companies on the value of advancing bi+ inclusion in their organization.   https://lnkd.in/eYdypD42   #BusinessOfBelonging #BisexualAwarenessWeek

If you feel drained, this is for you. You may think you have to keep pushing, but what you really need is a moment to rest and recharge. Just like watering a droopy plant can bring it back to life, taking a break allows you to gain the energy and fresh ideas to move forward effectively when you come back to your work. Even if it's just for 5-10 minutes, take time to rest 🪴
