The NYC Department of Sanitation is the world’s largest sanitation department.
About us
The NYC Department of Sanitation keeps New York City clean, safe, and healthy by collecting, recycling, and disposing of waste, cleaning streets, attacking the scourge of illegal dumping, and clearing snow and ice. The Department collects 24 million pounds of trash, recycling, and compostable material every day. We operate 59 district garages and manage a fleet of more than 2,000 rear-loading collection trucks, 450 mechanical brooms, 705 salt spreaders, and several dozen bike lane operations machines. Under the Adams Administration, the Department of Sanitation is aggressively cleaning more parts of the City than ever before, including over 1,000 long-ignored areas spread across every neighborhood. With the highest wintertime uniformed headcount in 20 years, we are more equipped than ever to remove snow and ice from the approximately 19,000 lane-miles of city streets.

Mayor Adams has been clear: we are cracking down on ghost cars – dangerous, untraceable vehicles used to commit crimes and disrupt quality of life in every neighborhood. In less than three weeks, our new task force with the New York City Police Department has busted more than ONE THOUSAND of these ghosts off our streets, and we’re not slowing down.

140 new Sanitation Workers, the heroes at the curb, ready to serve as so many have before them. 21 new Sanitation Police Officers and two new Sanitation Police Lieutenants, taking oaths as our Enforcement Division is stepping up the Department's work around quality of life in a major way. Eight new Superintendents, prepared to lead with an eye on data and technology. New civilian leaders, bringing it all together. Today, Commissioner Tisch and @NYCMayor congratulated them all at our September Graduation and Promotion ceremony.
