HON. ADAM SILVERA NAMED DEPUTY CHIEF ADMINISTRATIVE JUDGE FOR THE NEW YORK CITY COURTS NEW YORK––The Hon. Adam Silvera has been appointed Deputy Chief Administrative Judge for the New York City Courts, succeeding Supreme Court Justice Deborah A. Kaplan. Judge Silvera will be responsible for oversight of the administration and day-to-day operations of New York City’s trial courts, which are among the largest and most voluminous in the country. Judge Kaplan will now lead a citywide ADR initiative within the court system, enabling her to expand upon her work mediating complex civil matters from across the city. JUDGE HIGGITT NAMED JUDICIAL CO-CHAIR NAMED TO CHIEF ADMINISTRATIVE JUDGE’S ADVISORY COMMITTEE ON CIVIL PRACTICE NEW YORK––Chief Administrative Judge Joseph A. Zayas today announced the appointment of Hon. John R. Higgitt as Judicial Co-Chair of the Chief Administrative Judge’s Advisory Committee on Civil Practice. Justice Higgitt, a former member of the Committee, will serve alongside longstanding Chair George F. Carpinello in helming the advisory panel, which provides input and advice on a broad range of civil practice issues, including making recommendations on potential statutory and regulatory changes. SAVE THE DATE! On October 18, 2024, join the Gender Fairness Committees of the Third and Fourth Judicial Districts and community partners for a free CLE, Unpacking the DVSJA: Understanding the Domestic Violence Survivors Act. In 2019, New York State passed the Domestic Violence Survivors Justice Act, which expands the circumstances under which judges can consider domestic violence survivors' experiences of abuse in determining appropriate sentences for those who commit offenses, and also authorizes motions for re-sentencing. The implications of that law—as well as the interpretation of it—remains fluid as the trial and appellate courts are grappling with the legal nuances. We are co-sponsoring a FREE two-credit professional practice and one-credit ethics (pending) program analyzing the Domestic Violence Survivors Justice Act (DVSJA), its application, and the emerging appellate issues. It will include representatives of the bench, bar, and advocacy community. Registration details to follow. The program will take place in person with a virtual livestream attendance option. Our guest on today's Amici podcast is a young woman with a very special perspective on the doors that were opened, literally, by the ADA, and a painfully special insight into the consequences of inner-city gun violence. Her name is Rolanda “Dolly” Coleman, a soon to be second year law student at Fordham Law School, who was interning this summer with the New York City Criminal Court. Rolanda was only 17 years old and living in public housing in East New York when she was shot three times in a stairwell, paralyzing her and leaving her to navigate life in a wheelchair.
