The New York State Division of Human Rights announced today the resolution of a complaint filed against the Gouverneur Central School District and First Student, Inc., the nation’s largest school bus operator. The Division launched an investigation after reports of a racist assault on a 10-year-old African American girl on a school bus in the town of Gouverneur became public. The alleged racist assault, which took place in 2019, was perpetrated by three white students on the school bus with an adult monitor present. "Sending your child off on a school bus should never be a cause for concern," said Division of Human Rights Acting Commissioner Denise M. Miranda, Esq. "As New York children are settling into their new school year, I want to remind parents and guardians that the Division of Human Rights is committed to safeguarding the rights of students to be free from discrimination and harassment at school or on the school bus.” Read on to learn more: https://lnkd.in/eBnjK8wM

The Division’s Hate and Bias Prevention Unit is committed to making it easy for New Yorkers to stand against hate and bias in their community. Report a hate and bias incident at our hotline 1-844-NO-2-HATE!
One year ago, Governor Kathy Hochul created the New York State Office of the Chief Customer Experience Officer with a bold mission: to transform how New Yorkers interact with their government. This #CXDay, we’ve made remarkable progress in making state services easier, faster, and more accessible to the people we serve. From launching a tax filing pilot that saved New Yorkers time and money to introducing virtual assistance tools and redesigning state websites for a better user experience, we’ve worked tirelessly to ensure that you are at the center of everything we do. This milestone marks just the beginning of our journey toward a government that truly serves its people. We are proud of the strides we’ve made in the past year and are excited to continue improving the New York Experience. #NYXDelivers

Today, The New York Times highlighted the life of Lucine Amara, a Metropolitan Opera singer and civil rights trailblazer, who passed away at the age of 99. In 1976, Ms. Amara filed an age discrimination complaint with the Division of Human Rights and alleged that she was receiving fewer opportunities than younger singers. The complaint was resolved and Ms. Amara went on to perform in further productions for the Met such as “Turandot” and “La Gioconda”. Protections against age discrimination were added to the New York State Human Rights Law in 1958 - a decade earlier than similar federal protections. Today is the first ever #DisabledWomensEqualPayDay - a moment to spotlight the vast pay gap that women with disabilities experience in the US. According to research from the National Partnership for Women & Families, women with disabilities earn, on average, 50 cents per dollar that men without disabilities are paid. In New York State, equal pay is the law. If you experience discrimination based on sex or disability, file a complaint by visiting us at https://lnkd.in/dvFQQgn. #DisabledWomensEPD #EqualPayDay
