Too Hot: Cal/OSHA Standards Board Approves Indoor Heat Illness Rule After years of delay, the Cal/OSHA Standards Board unanimously adopted Cal/OSHA’s indoor heat illness prevention rule. Not wanting to be left in the dust, on June 21, Cal/OSHA published various guidance documents, including a model written program and FAQs on the new requirements, for California employers to rapidly come into compliance. https://lnkd.in/gYDasAk4

OSHA Advances Proposed Standard on Heat Injury, Illness Prevention While most of the country has been under a record-breaking heat wave, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has continued to advance its proposed standard for heat injury and illness prevention – giving employers yet another reason to sweat. The agency, which has been working on a heat stress standard since President Biden took office in 2021, submitted its proposal to the White House’s Office of Information and Regulatory Affairs (OIRA) for review on June 11. While OIRA has no timeline in which to complete its review, once completed, OSHA will publish the proposed standard for public comment and final rulemaking, which could see the enactment of a final rule by mid-2025. https://lnkd.in/gjw-ahW9

Federal numbers have increased each year, with more than 2,400 state plan heat inspections already this year. Here are the numbers since the start of the Heat National Emphasis Program in April of 2022: OSHA HEAT WATCH: Federal Heat Inspections 1,783 – FY 2022 2,786 – FY 2023 847 – FY 2024 State Plans Heat Inspections 4,789 – FY 2022 5,464 – FY 2023 2,408 – FY 2024 Many advocates are calling on Federal and state governments to step up and adopt heat standards and to address increased on-the-job heat-related injury, illness, and death. Over the past 20 years, workers are 7% more likely to be injured while working when the temperature reaches 85 degrees; when the temperature reaches 95 degrees. https://lnkd.in/eVYUXYRw
